    Posted: 30 January 2007 at 10:45pm
Hello all-

I need to pick out a book to read for english by friday, and being rather clueless, I am coming here for help.

Make any suggestions, I'm open to read anything.

Only rules are it must be +200 pages, and it can't be a book that has been made into a movie.

Thanks!

My brain is fried, and I've spent the last few minutes trying to think of something, so here's the long and complicated answer.

Movie where Brad Pitt plays the guys second personality, and the main character shoots himself in the mouth at the end to get rid of him, after starting a huge cult. Pours acid on his own hand at some point too. I realize this movie is famous, but I'm drawing a blank, and I'm sure you'll come up with the movie sooner than I will.

Anyway, so guy who wrote that book wrote another book called "Hostage", or some other "H" word, and it's great. Really interesting book, not too complicated, and if I remember correctly, about 300 pages long (I could be wrong).

Anyway, check it out, it was good.

Only book Chuck Palahnuik wrote with an 'H' was Haunted, and it is not one of his best.

Agreed. At least get something controversial in there.

Also, if you could add maybe a line or two about the book, that would make this a lot easier for me.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Into Thin Air:

Into Thin Air is a riveting first-hand account of a catastrophic expedition up Mount Everest. In March 1996, Outside magazine sent veteran journalist and seasoned climber Jon Krakauer on an expedition led by celebrated Everest guide Rob Hall. Despite the expertise of Hall and the other leaders, by the end of summit day eight people were dead. Krakauer's book is at once the story of the ill-fated adventure and an analysis of the factors leading up to its tragic end. Written within months of the events it chronicles, Into Thin Air clearly evokes the majestic Everest landscape. As the journey up the mountain progresses, Krakauer puts it in context by recalling the triumphs and perils of other Everest trips throughout history. The author's own anguish over what happened on the mountain is palpable as he leads readers to ponder timeless questions.

Good idea.

"Among the Dead Cities" is a very serious book that looks at the moral responsibility that the United States and Great Britain had when they bombed civillian cities during WWII. It is not to say that what the government did was the same as Japan or Germany's tyranny. However, it does claim through exstensive research how the Atomic bombs were not necessary and that an apology is still owed.

Heart of Darkness, By Joseph Conrad.

Hysteria- was Outbound Flight any good? I 'outgrew' the SW novels before it came out, but I was always a fan of Zahn's work.
"Abortion is not "choice" in America. It is forced and the democrats are behind it, with the goal of eugenics at its foundation."

Yup, he actually said that.

Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut

Vonnegut is really easy to read, unlike Hemingway for example. Plus, he's a funny genius.
