Last Sunday the guys at MCB went to Wanna-Play Paintball for the annual Cold Ass Game in Pennsyltucky. Finally got to get some in-game action with my Helmet Camera, thankfully a couple days earlier I bought a microphone to go along with it, makes for a better vid.

Higher Resolution file from Putfile

Lower Resolution file from Youtube

Not my choice on resolution on Youtube, it's their fault. I upload the same file for both sites and Youtube must have the Number Munchers monster just eating the quality of all vids hosted.

The video is a mixture of 4 games from that day all into 1 file. 8 minutes compressed is more entertaining than 2 hours of raw footage. Gotta say I'm quite happy with this gadget. Expensive sure but it's fun to rewatch the games I played. I can learn from my mistakes, and improve on where I did best to fine tune my game.

And yes, the 3rd game's footage you will note me rockin the Tippmann C3. Even with really small paint through a ginormous bore barrel I still could get 3 eliminations in the game. Not too shabby. But honestly half the shots were wild. Some corkscrewed, some divebombed, etc. Really gotta use a large bore paint with this marker.

Helmet cam! Sweet. Nice rocking the C-3. You make me want to play so bad. Too bad everything is still covered in snow.

Everything where I live is covered in snow. Thankfully we got it light, only about 1 foot last night. That's why I drove 4 hours south to get away from this lake effect crap. Damn global warming.

The camera system I got was from www.HelmetCamera.com including their MiniDVR they sell. I was searching the market for some decent recording devices. However none offered the whole package I needed. The MiniDVR they sell has a great battery life, accepts SD cards, has AV input AND output... so I could actually watch it on the TV right after recording if I really wish to.

However do keep in mind. It is a recording device made for the Helmet Camera. As in there is no lens system on it! It records from the input and that's it. Hence why I'm sure battery life is so good, because the camera and microphone get their own battery source seperate from the DVR.

But uncompressed video clearity is amazing.

Very nifty - could you post a pic of your cam setup?  Curious how you did that...   Link to your camera would also be appreciated.

:)

No problem, I'll see if I can find some batteries so I can take a picture of it.

Workable link for those curious on equipment.

Here we go.

Yes. Hundreds of dollars in equipment all held together by a Wal Mart special bucket of zipties. Gotta love when it works out like that.

Except the mic, it actually has an alligator clip.

I have this pack attached first, and then I slip my paint harness over top of it. The MiniDVR is in the center small pocket. In the middle giant pocket houses the battery pack and excess wiring. Requires 8AA batteries.

Very cool.  I am seriously considering something like that.

How much recording time do you get with that?

That is absolutely awesome.  The Mic wasn't extremely great but the setup is still pretty sweet!!

How much did you spend on it all?

Because that was the start of the day and they were clean. Then they got muddy, wind picked up, and slapped on gloves.

The microphone. I agree. My voice reverbs I think due to the mask vibrations when talking/yelling. However people around me it picks up it is a clean audio sound. I'm thinking of trying to find a better location for the mic, just not sure if any will be as secure as that one.

Recording time. The battery is claimed to last up to 4 hours, but it was freezing cold so I don't think it'd last more than 3 hours that day. But come springtime yeah it might actually. Electronics/batteries work better in tolerable temperatures. And extra batteries are only 30 bucks, so yay for that.
However the SD card, I have a 2 gig with a 133X write speed. That speed is required due to it being high speed video. Not many places offer these cards. Sandisk has their regular, Ultra II (which is 60X), both of those are too slow. You'd need the Sandisk Extreme III. IIRC 133X = 10mb write speed.

However with an SD card it's flash memory. You use it, erase, and use it again. So if you have a laptop you could possibly just record video, dump it onto the laptop, and use the same card all day long.

You said the mic had an allagator clip right? Try it either on your head strap or collar. Either location should transmit less vibration. The headstrap may be uncomfortable and not pick up your voice well. The collar should work well with both your voices and others if you can mount it low enough to where it is not behind the mask. I guess you could safety pin it in a similar location if you don't have the right kind of collar.

Which grade of set-up did you buy? the $200 or the more expensive ones? Curious because I want one now!
