I'll bet anything that nobody at my job will know what D-Day is. Just like they didn't know what the POW flag is.

I have a history class tonight, and I doubt many of them would know, but my coworkers could fill you in on all the details of Paris Hilton's "struggle."

I understand that looking at it in a narrow scope, it seems like a huge earth-shattering event.

However, I have an encyclopedia of battles here, everything dated back to the beginning of recorded time, and I cannot help but wonder if 100 or 500 years from now, D-Day will just be another page in a gigantic encyclopedia.

Give several reasons why.

Or at the very least try to keep a lid on your pomposity. It really doesn't make you look cool.

Whale, I'd like to see that book....Name? ISBN?

But yeah, I'm not gonna dwell on the rather depressing fact that most people in this country probably have no idea of this.

Instead, I'll focus on the value of the battle...Let's see...I'd say saving western Europe from fascism was probably an important thing that needed doing. Not to mention D-Day was the first step at finally stomping through the Third Reich and destroying the Nazi war machine before it caused more damage....Not real sure how you could argue that it wasn't important, except maybe in the grand scheme of human history, but even then, it was one of the most important battles of the biggest war in said history(unless we happen to top it eventually), so even then...it's uh...kinda a big deal...

There is an argument as to the effectiveness of WWII though, in that we left Eastern Europe in the clutches of yet another despotic regime, which may have really been worse than Hitler's, for 50 years after the fact....but hey, at least we saved half of Europe, right?

On the contrary, I was pointing out how you took his bait, without directly insulting you. But if you insist..

Doesn't count, the El Duce wasn't even really in power in 1944.

I was going to go out and shoot my garand a little bit today for historical value but yardwork got it the way, now it looks like rain. I also dont feel like cleaning it.

As for historical signifigance, I think D-day will definatly be in major history books for the next thousand year, providing we have history books and people to write them in 1000 years. It will at least be remembered for being the largest armada ever assembled, I dont see one topping it again soon. North Africa and Italy always take a back seat to D-day and the war in western europe, hopefully they'll get a little more mention.
