I have a tippmann A5 that i bought from a friend. The upgrades i know about is a 6 position stock, response trigger, and flatline barrel. I have gone paintballin with my cousins a couple of times and i have found that i like sniping that best but the flatline barrel is horribly inaccurate. I have been looking at some longer barrels:Smart Parts Tactical 20in, Core 21in Sniper Barrel, JJ ceramic 16in barrel and others . I am also looking at getting a air thru the stock and getting a front grip. Also would getting a bipod be worth it. Also if i would get a X7 hopper would it be better to get a scope, red dot system or leave it. If anyone has any ideas of other upgrades would you please let me know. I am new to paintball and do not know how i would install the parts. Any help would be good.

Don't mention sniping in the whole forum. It's not generally accepted as the point of view of sniping here is shooting from a very far distance of something liek a mile away which is impossible with paintball. If you want longer distance with better accuracy, some people say the Apex barrel is the thing for you. They also say it becomes more accurate when adding the apex tip to a more accurate barrel. I, as of now, disagree with that because I think the ball would become unstable after being affected by the "tongue" of the apex. Longer barrels, does not mean further shots or better accuracy. A 20 inch barrel is going to waste a lot of your air/co2. You will most likely have more breaks in the barrel with such a long barrel. The best size is in the range of 12-14 inches. The J&J ceramic barrel is considered a very good one piece barrel. The Lapco Big shot is also considered a good barrel. You don't want a bipod. Paintball is a fast moving sport and bunkering down with a bipod is not always the best thing to do when you have to run. Scopes are pointless. A red dot would be fine but you will find you won't need it. Scopes show you an exact spot and the paintballs will not go there. Paintballs are easily affected by wind and by themselves. Since the paintballs are not perfectly round, they are not going to fly straight, even with the best barrel out there. Paintballs can't fly far like a bullet either. The A5 should have already had a front grip. Before buying anything, go out and play and pay attention to the guns weak spots and what you would like to improve. I would suggest coming back to us to figure out what you should get when you need something. Many of us are very experienced with years of paintball under our belts and a lot of experience with Tippmanns. We also know how well some upgrades perform against other upgrades. Don't go to pbreview all the time and just read their reviews on products because some of those reviews are bogus. We know our stuff here. Using the search tool Welcome to paintball and to the forums. Be nice here and don't act like your the best and then we will help you with whatever you need and then you can help others that are like you now. |

As mentioned, anything over 14" is overkill. Go with something nice like a 14" JJ Ceramic. The X7 hopper will give you a lower profile. However, scopes and red dots tend to be useless unless for cosmetic purposes only. If you already have a CAR stock, just buy yourself a remote rather than another stock and remote. Bipod = NO!

Pumpker'd; (V.) When a pump player runs up and shoots you at point blank range because you thought 20bps made you good.

Thank you for the advice. I have looked at some JJ performance barrels and came up with three that had great reviews: JJ Ceramic Barrel and JJ S2 Barrel 2 piece barrel and Lapco Big shot . Which ever barrel i get will be 12-14 inches. I also decided to look at some performance parts. Right now i cannot afford them but always nice to know what to get. Would getting a spring kit and a bolt actually do anything spectacullar to the gun? I've also been told by some local paintballers that a Tech T A5 Vortex Mod + Lighting Rod Combo is a very good investment for A5 users. I have used marbilizer, stryker, and big boy paintballs. They all seem to break alot in the flatline but the stryker seem to be more accurate. Should i turn down the velocity and try again until it stops breaking paint or until it breaks less but fires fast still?

The flatline works best in the 260-270fps range. You really shouldn't be getting a lot of breaks. The balls are breaking in the barrel and not in the chamber, correct? The vortex/lightning rod are good investments to get your cyclone working properly and quickly. A quick exhaust valve helps also. Or instead of getting a QEV, get the QEPH. Not to sound retarded but how do you check fps? Mostly correct, I've had maybe 20 bust in the chamber out of 500+ balls. I think i may have a QEV system on but may just QEPH just to be sure that i have it on. |

You can check the velocity in the paintball field where you play at, you should ask someone in the field to chrono your marker for you. Also, if you play outdoors, you guys need a chrono to check your velocity EVERY time you go out and play. Edited by daniero - 22 June 2007 at 3:20pm |

When i bought the gun i was told that the fps was 305 so i left it at that. Next time i head out I'll get it checked out and move it down to 265.

305fps is over the regular velocity allowed in any field. Just a question, do you always play outdoors?
That speed is pretty dangerous for this reason: if you play with co2, there are always spikes where the speed may rise by 10 or even 20fps, and that's not safe anymore, that will hurt a lot and leave nasty bruises. Also, even if you know that it was at a certain velocity in a certain day, for safety reasons, you should always check your speed every day you play. |

What about 32 Degrees Whisper Barrel? It is 14 inches with small to large porting creating less wobble.

No wonder you're having problems. That is way too fast for the Flatline Barrel. If you have the time to tune the barrel. Back it down to around 250 fps. Shoot a few balls. If they shoot pretty good, turn the velocity up about 5 fps and do it again. Keep going until you notice the accuracy starting to get worse. Creep it back down until you get that 'sweet spot' and remember what it was. If you are still having problems, it might be time to send the flatline in for some 'reconditioning'. The upper part of the barrel needs to be roughed up a little every 10 or so cases of paint shot through it. It helps to impart the backpsin on the paintball to make it shoot farther. |

And I beg to differ about sniping in paintball. I do it all the time when I play. It may not be in the strict military definition of sniping, but I use cover, concealment and distance to get the job done. Believe what you may, but there is such a thing as paintball sniping.

I don't believe in sniping because who in paintball doesn't use cover, concealment and some distance. Everybody on the field would be considered snipers, even front men.

Today i went out and shot the A5 and turned down the fps. I broke 1 paintball just outside the barrel. Also many of the paintballs didn't not break at all except at at 70 yards. What would happen to do that?? Edited by Blasterboy - 23 June 2007 at 11:10pm |

Just because you don't believe or agree with it doesn't meean it doesn't happen. I'm sure there are plenty of Apex and Flatline owners out there that take advantage of the extended range as I do. Many probably don't admit to sniping because their remarks are met with derisive comments. |
