    Posted: 10 July 2007 at 8:53am

So I receantly came across a remington 870 and was wondering what kind of upgrades I should get for it. It's chambered for 12 ga bird/buck shot, shoots both 3 inch and 2 3/4 inch shells, has 7 round capacity, and the barrel is 18 inches, the rest is basically stock. I'm thinking about getting an 8 shot mag extension but is 7 enough? Also I am for sure getting a longer barrel as I want to mostly use it for trap skeet compitition shooting but I don't know if I want to go with a 26" or 28". Other than those two things what else do you guys think would be a worthwhile investment?

if you can't hit something with 7 shots...you shouldn't be shooting.

The more shots I have in the magazine the less I have to reload, decreasing downtime.

Definitely the 28" sniper barrel and a bipod.  And a silencer.  The pen spring mod also will work wonders.

Um, if your hunting you'll need a plug the limit is 5 rounds, unless your just target shooting/messing around. If you were looking to make it all badass you should of gotten a Mossberg 500.

Mostly range shooting for the 3rd time. Plugs arn't hard to come by I knew hunting restricted capacity. As for trying to make it look badass... you don't buy a gun to make it look badass, you buy it for functionality.

Shotguns can look badass and still function. You can make 20 inch home defense guns and those are badass and usually good squirrel guns.

You point a gun outside your house to shoot a squirrel were I live and it's a felony. I have no use for a home defense gun at the time. What I was getting at when I said you buy a gun for fuctionality not for looks is two fold. One the remington can look every bit as "badass" as the mossberg can if not more so with less money. Two and I'm not trying to get in an argument, from my experience with the two guns the mossberg is not of equal quality with the remington. As to why the remington can be customized easier it's been around much longer allowing time for extended usage, and for more accessories for the rifle to be produced.

We have both the Mossberg and them rem. i wasn't trying to say the rem wasn't good. both are great shotguns but i live in the country so having a nice small light gun to carry around when ur just screwin around in the woods is nice sometimes.

A 26 in. barrel will suit you just fine for trap and hunting as well. If you like the shorter barrels you could have it custom cut in the 21"-24" range. I have seen a 870 with a 21"...sharp looking and performed as well as my 26". Other then that there really is no need to upgrade, unless you like the feel and look of different stocks, forend grips, etc.

I was thinking mostly about the side saddles, thanks for the info on the barrel though, really wanted one shorter but not too short. Also I was looking around and saw this

those are stripper clips right? Where can I stumble across those, I've googled them and havn't found anything other than this.

A set of chokes? Not really needed if you are just going to be target shooting. But if you decide to get into hunting they will come in handy.

If you hve your heart set on getting a longer barrel, then I'd happily say go for it, but get the shorter of the longer barrels.

Personally I like 20" as my barrel length, but it's up to you if you want to use it for skeet/trap.

For those sort of sports there really isn't much you can get to make the gun look meaner. Just get a nice set of wood furniture for it and call it quits.

However I'm in the process of setting my gun up for a more "tactical" application.

First thing, get a Vang Comp barrel. Most shotgun barrels are the equivalent of plumbing pipes. Vang barrels are precision made pieced of equipment. They are about the biggest accuracy enhancers a shotgun can get. Seriously.

Once you've got the accuracy sorted out, dump the piddly little bead frontsight and in you HAVE to keep it Skeet like, get a piece of optic fiber inserted in it. My personal preference is a propper set of ghost rings and post sight setup. These are the second biggest accuracy enhancers you can get. Both MMC and XS make decent, easy to install shotgun ghost righ sights.

Now I like a nice set of wood on my guns, but I prefer polymers. Evil Black weapons shoot better, just like red cars go faster. The first thing you'e got to do is replace the forend with something black, evil, and prererably expensive. My personal preference here is the Sure Fire frontend. Why? It looks cool. It's also very practical in terms of allowing light and shotgun to be wielded at the same time. It's pricy, but wicked. Around $300

Then you're left with the stock. Personally I prefer the feel of a non pistol grip shotgun stock. It's whatr I'm good at shooting. However for recoil controll you can't beat the Knoxx industries Spec Ops stock. As I said I'd get the Compstock for the original grip, but the pistol is also ok. Incidently, the Spec Ops stock is now Remingto LEO standard.

The Spec Ops

And the one I'm getting the Compstock

Then you can get a Wilson Combat sidesaddle that uses the existing screw holes in the side of your receiver to mount, no drilling and tapping. I'd go with the 4 shot holder, the 8 is simply too long IMHO.

Depending on how old your gun is, before you do all this send it off to Wilson Combat for the Remington Steel workover. They replace easily worn bits, and they replace inferior quality bits (like the original mag follower) with new technology ones.

They can also add on most of the things you want in house. So you ship your gun off, and it arrives back looking like an EBS.

Before

After

Of course they do offer a discount if you get them to rebuild it to one of their Professional or Border models. You get the Remington Steel workover, the ghost ring sights, the SureFire forend a side saddle, the Knoxx Spec Ops stock, improved saftey systems and they can probably install a Vang barrel as well.

This is the LEO 14" barrel, but I've spoken to them and they do a similar package on 18" barrel and longer weapons for civilians.
