So I just read Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent. Basically, the author went "undercover" as a man. Went to bowling leagues, strip clubs, held jobs, stayed at a monastary and a mens' retreat, dated women, etc. Very impressive field research. The book describes her adventures and her social observations. The book is primarily a sociology/philosophy bit, with the author explaining everything she learned about men and women. And it is a darned fine book. There are some things she misses or gets wrong, IMO, but on the whole the result is very insightful in terms of male and female thought and behavior, and the interactions between them. Hard to give any meaningful details, since nothing really "happens" in the book, but if you have just a tad of patience and want to read something thought-provoking, I highly recommend. It is an easy read, despite the heavy subject matter. Not terribly long, and not heavily written. Thumbs up. |
