screw the bolts into the old nuts from the back side, and use pliers to pull them/wiggle them out.

Imagine there’s a picture of your favourite thing here.

I was going to suggest checking the Yellow Pages for nearby veterinarian's offices.

After everyone quits chuckling, lets get back to the thread. The nuts aren't glued into their recesses at all. They are held there from friction of the close dimension of the nut to the recess and the layer of paint.

Sticking the screw in from the other side and pulling the nut out is a lot of effort with a good chance of smacking yourself with the pliers or the marker frame. Take the marker apart; and lay the right side inside-up on a folded bath towel on a solid table. Screw the bolt into the nut from the top side (the same way it would go to hold the two halves together) the tap the bolt with a wooden or plastic mallet (hammer). The nut will pop right out and nothing goes flying, hits anything it's not supposed to, or gets misaligned possibly distorting the recess hole.

It's difficult to read mood/conotation in internet text/speak.  I should remember that.
