Does anyone have a custom 98 with a sniper barrel?

I'm thinking of getting one. I wanted to know what the performance is like.

Blah. I have one. Wasn't impressed. Way too expensive for what you are getting. Just get a J&J Ceramic or a Lapco Bigshot. WAY better bang for your buck.

What was wrong? was the power to low, or is it just not accurate?

You can get better performance out of a JJ Ceramic or LAPCO Bigshot than the "sniper" barrel for less money. The 98c is a great choice in guns, but if you're going to spend the money to upgrade your barrel, at least get one worth the money.

Power? If you mean velocity, no matter the gun or the barrel, 280 FPS is gonna be 280 FPS. That also means the same range, so don't expect to get a distance increase because you switched barrels. The only way to get more range legally is to get the Flatline or the Apex barrel.

The reason I don't like the Sniper barrel is because it offers similar performance (maybe a little better) as the stock barrel, and I paid $50 for it. Not worth it. I got a J&J Ceramic for $35, and it was a better performer. It was easier to clean, made better and performed better.

j&j ceramic lined are awesome, my friend has one on his gun and if you should chop a ball a few followup shots and it pretty much shoots itself clean, its still very playable and your paint is not picture perfect but is alot more accurate than some barrels when they get clogged with a chopped ball in there

easier to clean definately than my flatline, he can get away with one pass usually in a game, i have to do 2 or 3 to get my accuracy back

One of my friends says that, spyder Is way better. I've never used a spyder, but I have used a Rental 98. Is spyder better?

not in my book bro. there are a couple of versions that spyder has that are ok but they are more expensive and dont really out perform the tippmann. tipp's are solid guns through and through. besides they are way more cudstomisable. as far as barrels go the apex and flatline will get you additional distance but you lose velocity. you will have a tighter pattern with the j & j and for the price of a flatline you can get a j&j kit with 4 backs and 3 tip lengths allowing you to have the length you want when you want it and the right back to shoot virtually any paint size. Remember that in paintball the physics are not the same as in the real gun world. longer does not really mean better. you want a lite barrel with a smoothe honed interior finish, porting makes some difference too but the biggest thing to know that no matter how good your barrel is it is all for nothing if you dont use a quality paint that is suited for the barrel you have. you will have to try o few types to get a feel for what shoots best through your barrel of choice. I use carnage tear grade its good for me but there are many other brands to choose from just dont buy the cheapest grade. So  in closing if your on a buget j&j 2 peice barrel 14'' or 16'' is a good length. I use a 14''. if you can afford it get there elite barrel kit. its about 120 most places but shop around and you can find em for about 90. If you want just one barrel and dont mind spending the $ Id say dye ultralite 14'', stiffi 14'', or go to rap4 paintball on line and check out there hammerhead barrels.

You might also consider the tippmann A-5 for a gun, that is my gun and I love it. But if you really want a good custom 98 there is a member of my woodsball group selling one already modded for 250. Take a look at it in the forum section of our web site www.combatpaintball.net. Its bad a#% and a real good buy. look in the forum under markers/ tippmann.

was looking at the A5, but I have not used it, so I don't know what it's like, in comparison to the 98.

what are the pros and cons of the A5?

pros.... theres probably alot more realistic upgrades in terms of military/swat style cosmetics.... but IMHO heres the proper upgrade path, best possible barrel, best air system, hoppers and electric/response triggers and finally cosmetics

you can put all the useless cosmetic crap on an a5 and at the end of the day its still an a5

the 98 has some great cosmetics too but is a more stylized marker and not so specifically military looking like the a5 and x7 models

nice thing about the a5, the hopper is already upgraded and should easily keep up with the gun out of the box, a 98 if you add any electric or response trigger to make it faster, your going to have to get a decent battery operated hopper, a5 and 98 otherwise in my book are pretty much the same, its all in the barrel and a consistent air delivery system, upgrade your barrel and get a good nitro tank, dump the co2, the tippmanns run fine on it but its just not the optimum if you ask me

other than that the skys the limit, you cant go wrong with either sir

Here's something to think about before you spend your hard earned money.

I've done a considerable amount of research on barrels and how the paintball guns work and I know a lot of you know how paintball guns work, but actions that effect the ball velocity?

Well, here's some facts that may change you mind about buying a sniper barrel.

What do you think happens a fraction of a second after the ball is fired down the barrel? The bolt is already cocked a ready to fire once more. If you siad yes, give yourself a pat on the back. Here's the problem with long barrels...

As soon as the ball is 4 or maybe 5 inches down the barrel, guess what point the bolt is at; it's about midway under the feed neck.
At that time, what do you think happens to the pressure that is pushing the ball down the barrel? That's right, the pressure is gone because it has escaped through the feed neck and your ball is only about halfway through the barrel.

Hey what a minute, if it's only halfway what's pushing it the rest of the way out? Yip, you guessed it, absolutely nothing except velocity.

But wait, isn't there friction in the barrel?  Right again! if the ball loses propellant after the first 4 to 6 inches andonly the ball's velocity currying it the rest of the way through the barrel,  wouldn't you be loses  velocity  with a barrel longer than  12 to 14 inches?  Man, you are really on the ball today; no pun intended.

The only way around this problem is to get a two piece barrel such as a Dye ultra lite or similar style barrel. but still, it will only help a little.

The moral of the story, if you want velocity and distance, stay away form long barrels.

Well folks, that's our lesson for today on long barrels.

Brian

As educational as that sounded, it seems to me like it's full of holes. First off, the bolt is sealed into the barrel before the ball even leaves contact. The way the 98c is designed, the hammer doesn't hit the valve until the bolt is sealed, applying full pressure to the paintball, and eliminating blow back. That's right, there isn't blow back on 98c. If the bolt was half way past the neck, then all pressure would be lost, and the paintball wouldn't shoot. Your theory doesn't even make sense. You're suggesting the motion of the bolt shoots the paintball. That would barely be enough to push the paintball out of the barrel, and make CO2 effectively useless. CO2 doesn't propel the bolt, it propels the ball.

Also, if your marker is chronographed, then your marker has the same velocity and range as every other marker on the field. You can have an 8" barrel, or a 21" barrel, that ball will go 280 FPS.

Yes, because the velocity is measured as the ball leaves the barrel. With a longer barrel, or a tighter fit inside the barrel, it may take a little more gas flow past the velocity screw to get the ball up to that speed, but that's about it.

Carrying on in the direction of the two previous (informative and correct) posts:  Someone mentioned earlier that he Flatline and Apex shoot slower than other barrels.  This needs to be expanded upon.  If you put one of these on your marker, you will see a velocity difference from the stock barrel.  However, in most cases, all you have to do is use the velocity adjuster to get back up to adequate velocities.  This would be the same case if you replaced almost any shorter barrel with any longer barrel.  Almost any change between barrels requires rechronographing the marker.  (Differences such as ball-to-barrel fit, friction from the interior barrel surface, and length of barrel, all effect the amount of propellant necessary to get the ball up to speed.)

Also, with the Flatline, too much velocity is a bad thing:  My personal experience is that the 98 Flatline is most accurate when used at around 275 fps and the A5 is most accurate at around 265 fps.
