I don't know what you consider Kanye West [hip hop, rap, etc.,] simply because it is not my forte, but I have to say I have been listening to the album Graduation a lot since it came out. It is quite impressive.

I would place him under Hip hop. You should check out  College Drop out and Late Registration. They are also Both really good albums.
