Its geometry and trigonometry applied with a little bit of physics.  If something is a certain shape and the measurement for one part is X, then you can deduct the other measurement must be Y. After that its just as creative as you can get.

Of course, I'm sure after you design several simple buildings, you start to learn "If the room needs to be large enough for four, make it N x Y feet".

I had to design structures for our drama department, its a pain but if you have something of a fixed size to build around (such as a painting or screen or whatever) its much easier.  Sketch-up is your friend.

No dice, we're keeping the front nice and open for greenspace/ walking traffic. The area that we're putting this in, walking traffic practically takes priority to cars, so we're making it pedestrian friendly/ inviting. Also, triangular buildings for this particular purpose are kind of a no-no, and the prof didnt like people using up the entire triangular lot. Couple reasons to keep it as open as it is.
