Hello all... Super newb here. I did a search for best barrel under $50 on these forums and keep coming up with J&J Ceramic and Lapco Big Shot. I'm not a fan of ordering things online, preferring to look and touch before I buy anything. I called around to every paintball shop in the area and none sell these 2 barrels. I asked why and 2 of the stores said that they stopped carrying these 2 brands because there are better, more in demand barrels out now. Are these 2 barrels really obsolete or were these guys just trying to get me to buy something they had in their stock? After reading countless articles on this subject on these forums, I've got my heart set on these 2 choices. I noticed most of the posts about these barrels are older. Is there anything better NOW(2008) than these 2 barrels for the money? Thanks! |

Hmmm... interesting that they decided to stop carrying them. My guess is not because there are "better" barrels out there now... but because their current distributor/supplier simply doesn't carry Lapco/J&J Products and/or the profit margin isn't there for them.
I refuse to believe that either of these proven designs is capable of becoming 'obsolete'. If they're being overshadowed by newer designs/makes... that's only because of marketing/advertizing. In today's Hyped-up market... the 'latest' is 'greatest'. "You don't want that OLD barrel! You want this new Fizzlesmasher 5000!" 
Not sure if you can convince one of the stores to special order one for you? If you feel the need to see/feel one before purchasing... see if you can locate another local Missouri player that might have one you can see. As for the current crop of barrels... I haven't kept up with what's out there right now. Maybe someone else can provide some insight as to what is worth looking at. |

You can get better prices for the J & J barrels at Action Village here: The prices on the Lapco barrels are close to the ones at County Sports. |

Thank you guys for the speedy replies! Last question before I make my final purchase... What makes the Lapco Big Shot worth $20 more than the J&J Ceramic? I searched the forums and you guys all pretty much rate them equally except for the noise. I have to buy 2 of everything for my son and I so saving $40 would be nice. |

There really isn't, its mostly preference. As for my $.02, I loved my J&J, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another someday. |

The J&J is a weird grayish color, the Lapco is sexy black. The Lapco is loud, the J&J is quietish. Pretty much preference. |

The J & J barrels are also easier to clean because they are teflon-impregnated. A lot of people say they're 'self cleaning', but that has never been my experience. I've always squeegeed my barrels clean after any breaks. They look as good after that as some other barrels that have been cleaned with soapy water.

I prefer the J&J too. While its not fully self cleaning I have shot through a break or 2 in a few fire fights. They are very accurate and are quieter (which I like).

HAAA!!!! I can't tell you how many things I've fallen for over the years. The amount of money worth of unused parts in my PB box is unbelievable. I have an old *cough*spyder*cough**cough* that I easily put 500+ bucks into, (still a POS), and I have a guy who might buy it for 100 bucks w/ some of my old gear. It sucks, but honestly I will never use that gun again, I have 3 various tippmann's. Check out PBRewiew.com and read about anything you're thinking about buying. Some of the reviews are BS, but you can find out some great info on potential purchases. I have also heard the J&J Ceramic is a great barrel, mentioned more than any other barrel. I haven't bought one, but I do have a new style 16" Tippmann Werks Barrel. It's about 5 bucks more than the J&J, but in 4000 rounds, I have not had a single ball break inside the barrel. I did have 2 chops from an empty tank & the cyclone feed, but the barrel works great, quiet, and accurate. Eventually, I'll probably get a 12" J&J for a shorter, close quarter barrel option. Does anyone have any experiance with CP barrels? I was looking for a LAPCO Autospirit and the guy behind the counter was pushing the CP.

I heard about these and Tear drops(which I don't know much about) are really awesome barrels... For the J&J though.. Which one or size should I get for my Custom pro? I just want better accuracy and maybe quietness...

I have a Spyder Compact that I have like a 100 dollsrs into. Works good. J&J Ceramic, and air through stock... Anyway, I'd go for the J&J Ceramic myself. WHo ever told you they are out of style appearently do not play scenario or woodsball. The J&J is probably the most popular barrel for woods and scenario players. They were just trying to get you to buy what they had in stock. And the other poster is probably correct. Their distributor probably dont carry them... Edited by Halo - 25 March 2008 at 5:42am |

prefference there. I would agree that usually the biggest I go on the A5 is 12 though. The barrels already sit so far at the front of the marker that it is a true 12" longer than just the gun where as alot of other guns the barrel sits back further. |

I put a 14" Lapco Big Shot and it Helped tremedously!! I don't know anybody personally that owns a longer barrel, But I will go ahead and recommend this barrel To anyone with a A-5!

There is basically no performance difference between 12" and 14" barrels. The different lengths are really only useful in speedball where you can push into the bunker and the longer barrel helps when playing in the back.
