Tippmann's are painted. The type of metal used in the aluminum cannot be anodized. Pros: Paint is cheap, and its easy to make designs. Cons: its not very durable.
Most other guns on the market, that aren't plastic, are anodized. Anodizing is a process in which a hard porous coating of aluminum oxide is applied to the surface electro-chemically. The porous metal, before it is sealed, will accept a dye. Pros: Very solid and crisp looking. Can do designs with lasers, or coat with other metals. Cons: most expensive, parts can only be stripped about 10 times before tolerances are off. Your other option is powder coating. A part is magnetically charged and a colored powder is sprayed on the surface. The part is then baked and the coating hardens into a shell. Pros: Cheaper than anodizing. Cons: not as hard of a coating as ano, and you are pretty limited when it comes to designs. |

I wouldn't paint it just cause of a scratch. But if your going to, then the sticky should tell you everything you need to know (and more).

if its just a scratch, you could always touch it up with nail polish. won't be a permenant thing, but it will do the job.

for my markers i just use a flat engine enamel black paint to dull
anything that has a sheen and touch up. for spots that have a sheen,
hit with 800 grit sandpaper first to rough up a bit so paint lasts
alittle longer

well powdercoating is a very awesome coating. we use it on our quads all of the time. and it can be customizable. it can come in every color that paint comes in. its literally ten times harder than paint. and can be masked and have layer just as paint can. another alturnative(SP?) is moly coating. its extremely durable, and commonly used on brake calipers because it disapates heat. and they sometimes will use it on rifle bolts because they get hot

If painted correctly and with the right kind of paint, the paint will be durable. You can use expensive processes like powder coating, but you can do what you need to at home.
Painting is nice because you can efficiently change colors every year... |
