    Posted: 09 April 2008 at 3:00pm
Hey all, I'm having a big problem with my a-5 chopping paint. I've had the gun for about 2 months now. I've shot 3k plus rounds of frostbite with not a single break. Now last weekend I went to a local field using the dxs bronze and the gun started chopping paint on the first burst fire. Since then the gun has just been chopping paint, I've tried using different paint ranging from dxs bronze, stinger, and pmi premium all with the same results. There's paint splatter in the cyclone but no shells. I even upgraded all the internals on the cyclone hoping that would solve the problem, but no dice still happening. And in the process I inspected the stock cyclone internals and they appeared to be in good shape.

I've hooked the air up and watched the cyclone, it appears to be operating properly. It doesn't skip loading. The only other thing that I did to the gun was a drop forward. I tried taking that off too and the gun is still chopping paint regardless of what firing mode I'm using. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it either, it just chops when it feels like it. I've stripped the gun twice already to clean and inspect it. All of the o-rings and everything seem fine. The bolt seems to have a full range of motion when I dry fire it without the cyclone on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the huge walls of text, I'm just trying to explain everything I've tried already. I also looked through a few threads on here to no avail. It's just very frustrating, I don't understand how the gun can go from shooting over 3k rounds without a single hitch to chopping paint like crazy in one step. Please help me.

what barrel are you using?  is most of the paint in the barrel?  if so then it is the barrel breaking the balls not the cyclone chopping.  What was the temp also?

I'm using the J&J ceramic 14". The temp was 60's. When I tore the gun down both times. The bolt had paint all over it and the cyclone had paint in it. Just paint the no shells. I also haven't had a problem with the barrel either as a bulk of the previous 3k balls went through that barrel. I'm using the stock velocity, tried turning it down still chopped. And I'm also running HPA.

Test it with the stock barrel and different paint in the J&J.  The J&Js I've used seem to be a slightly smaller bore than most other single piece barrels.  This normally isn't a problem, but if you get large bore paint or paint that has been exposed to humidity, it can be.

I've tried a few different brand paints. I used the dxs bronze, stinger, and pmi premium. According to the other threads my paint is a good match for the barrel, it shoots out like a blow dart when you put one in the barrel and blow through it.

Ok so I tried a few other things. I ruled out the barrel, used the stock one and it's still breaking. I also shot a few rounds with no barrel and it was still breaking. It's breaking between the barrel adapter and the front bolt.

is your barrel adapter put in all the way? Is the detent (the little orange thing) put in the right way?

Yea, the barrel adapter is in all the way. The detent is also seated properly. I started having this problem before I even took the gun apart for the first time. On the front bolt, if you look very closely at it. There appears to be a few ever so light scuffs on the side of the bolt where it rubs against the metal lining. I'm not sure if that's normal or not.

EDIT: also I should mention that I found a piece of a shell sitting a little in front of the bolt after it started chopping.

Ok, more playing around and I have found that it is breaking the balls in the cyclone feeder. Now my question is what can I do to stop this? It was doing it with the stock cyclone. I now upgraded the internals after the problem to JCS jet click ratchet, tech t lightning rod, and tech t qeph. After these upgrades, I'm still having the same problem. I haven't got the squishy paddles yet, will that stop it? I don't understand though why it's breaking every kind of paint besides winter paint though.

Ok so I stripped the gun and cyclone and cleaned everything. Once back together I dry fired it a few times. It seems that sometimes the cyclone isn't fully advancing or clicking into place. Again I don't know if that could be the cause or not. Just grasping for hairs at this point.

EDIT: So I found that because the cyclone is not fully advancing to the next "click" or that it's over advancing it which allows the ball to roll half way out of the chamber and the bolt catches the ball and breaks it since the paddle isn't fully in position preventing the ball from rolling back out of the chamber. Now my question is what the heck is causing it not to fully advance?
