I was about a day from finishing. I was working on it in first period (had finished my work) in my teacher's work shop. I had put it on a workbench, and turned around to go set up the drill press to drill the holes for the bridge. As soon as I turn around, I hear a loud crack. My worst fears were realized when I turned around and saw it on the floor upside down three feet below where I had left it. On the right side of the guitar there is a fracture that penetrates all the way through the wood, all the way around. On the left, part of the top was smashed in by a potentiometer. My teacher confirmed that it was not reparable, and would likely fall to pieces with regular use.
I was almost in tears at seeing my hard work destroyed. But then I had a new hope. Everything I had learned from this one, everything I wanted to do differently, I now could. I plan to build another one, I'll start this weekend. This next one, if I choose to make another semi-hollow, will have bent wood for the sides, rather than routing the cavity. My other thought was to just make a solid, but I still like the thought of building a semi-hollow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Now that I will be fabricating the guitar differently, I have the ability to make it bigger. Now I'm leaning towards a Super 400 CES type design.

That sucks man. Oh well, you should be able to build this next one a lot quicker since you know what you're doing now (or at least better than before). You may have lost the guitar, but at least you got the learning experience.

I should clarify the accident, I still don't know how it happened because it makes no sense at all. I put the guitar on the workbench, flat on the wooden surface. None of the guitar was hanging over the edge, but it was right by the edge. I turn around and start walking away when I hear the crack. The workshop is isolated from our classroom, the only unlocked door is within sight of me at all times. Nobody else was in that room with me to cause the accident. There was no draft or anything, plus the guitar weighs a lot, around 6-7 lbs.
I just got back from guitar center, I played a couple different guitars including a very large Ibanez that was about the size of a Super 400. It was weird at first, but I got used to it and it was comfortable. The sound was amazing. My current thought is to use a flat maple veneer for the sides, and a spruce or ceder veneer for the top. Maple core and back. |

Is that normal for a guitar to break after nothing?

your new guitar sounds sweet. At least you didn't accidentally drop it while playing it.
