Price tag between $100 and $200.  Doesn't need anything extremely fancy.  I'd just like a decent, fairly durable (I'm clumsy), camera phone that is fairly small, and is good for texting.  Internet access is nice, but not needed.

I've been looking at some Blackberries, but i'm not completely sold on one yet.  I know nothing of cell phones.

Also, no iPhones, please.

Find a used Sanyo VI-2300. Doesn't have a Camera, but it's one of the toughest phones I have ever seen. Plus you could probably get one for roughly $20.

Durable, capable of internet. Texting and taking pictures with it, however, is a pain.

When I switched over to sprint I got a samsung a900. I usually break my phone every 6 months or so but I've had this for a year and a half. Similar size to a razr, camera is so so, internet access... Pretty easy to text, and probably really cheap by now.

Have you ever actually used an iPhone yourself?

My guess is no, otherwise you wouldn't have highlighted any of those points.

It is in the price range, durable and pretty small.  I have no problems texting on mine either unless Im driving...then it becomes a bit challenging

Ditto. The Dare is at least as good as the iPhone in features and you won't be a tool for getting it.

I really enjoy my Blackberry Curve. I've got the 8330, and the Bold won't be released on Sprint service, so far as I know. I need to have Sprint service because my sister is an employee and I get an very nice deal.

The phone is great. The camera is very nice, and that rainbow picture was one I took with it. Internet is reasonably fast and the thing has lots of other features I use, but several have extra charges. I have chess on there, and it routinely whoops me. I use it for an organizer, to check my e-mail (it does so automatically, and will do this for up to ten e-mail addresses), text, IM, to take memos, it has a password "vault", easy to type with, and much, much slimmer and friendlier than the older style Blackberries.

I've never touched an iPhone, and my previous cellphone experience was limited to one Nextel (very tough) and one Samsung (very small).

Your guess is wrong. I've used an iPhone.

Maybe I'm wrong about the price, maybe they changed it, but anytime I've used one of these phones, it is so buggy I can't even stand it.

I was probably wrong about the durability as I've never really dropped one, but I do know texting on it is the biggest pain in the ass ever. Punching away at tiny on-screen keys and you're not even sure if you're hitting it or not. Physical buttons > touch screen keyboard.

He also said he doesn't want anything extremely fancy, and that's what Apple sells their products on: fanciness.

For me it go so much easier to text after using it a few times.  But I guess it really doesnt matter.  Some people like them, some dont.  Plus it matters what service he has/wants like HV said.
