Over Flanders Fields a mod of microsofts CFS3 is almost out. A true WW1 flight simulator, from the 1914/15 era to the 1918 true fighters a really interesting game.
http://www.overflandersfields.com/info.htm 39 flyable aircraft and flying historical areas and squadrons, campaign and such. I can not wait...to see how long I will last flying my favorite aircraft of WW1 the RFC Fe2b over the front. This era has always been my favorite and everytime I get to NY a mandatory trip to Old Rhinebeck is required. http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/ and my trip back with a flight on the 1929 New Standardf BiPlane. BTW I will start posting pics of the R/C Fe2b I am building once it starts taking form, right now still cutting formers and dies for wing stringers. Already have $200 in minature turnbuckles and fixtures/nuts and bolts ordered. The rigging will be mini filiment steel brade and the outrigging and struts will be actual mahogany like the real thing. Accourding to my calculations a geared electric with a 4 blade will give a scale speed of about 70mph (real ground speed of @40mph) and will lift the weight of 2 12 in GI Joes as crew. I always thought that aside from the almost imminent prospect of death, flying in WW1 would have been immensely fun. The maneuverability of the planes coupled with the open cockpits and the close-range combat just seems like it would have been awesome, again, except for the whole life expectancy.
Is any extra hardware for the computer required (joystick is my main concern, since it was the reason I couldn't play Aces High so long ago)? |

The frostbite and having engine grease spat in your eyes wouldn't have been fun.

I probably say this in every other thread, but I live in the next town over from Rhinebeck. Never been to old rhinebeck though. Is that near teh fairgrounds?

You know OS, the next time you're in NY, you've got to let me know. Rhinebeck isn't that bar from me at all.

You really need a joystick for any flying game. You can find a brand new one pretty easily for $15 that will do all the basics (more than good enough for cfs) I never liked cfs because I hate flying games. Flying simulators and actually realistic combat flying simulators are the thing for me. Oldsoldier: You fly rc planes? What do you have in your fleet. |

Yes I fly R/C. Currently I am repairing the fleet. I have a .60 P-47, a .60 P-40, a ARF Fokker D-VII, and a ARF Se5. The Spitfire MkII went down in a blaze of glory. I am building a scratch built Fe2b from original RFC plans. That is my primary goal with estimated roll-out Spring 09.
As for flying games, I like IL2, but I have been waiting for a WW1 flight/combat sim for awhile. I really look foward to the early 14/15 era may 1916. The real beginnings of air combat. |

Gas I suppose? Never liked it personally... too inefficient and a bit of a pain in the ass if you have a sudden urge to "just fly".
Il2 was out of my time unfortunately and I just don't think I could get into it. Too bad since I have heard nothing but good things. |

Gas is a hassle but power wise makes the grade at the dogfights. I like electric Kits and ARF and may switch over as power increases. Both WW1's are electric.
Have a 6 channel 3 freq choice radio so many options on building. |
