So I was informed last week that with the budget cuts that the school I work for has to struggle with, they're getting rid of my position. They don't think having a full time tech is worth the money they're paying me. (I still don't think they know what I do here) They're making a mistake, but if I claim that, it'll look like I'm begging for my job, and I don't really care if this place circles the drain after I leave.

I spoke with the superintendent this morning, and we're on good terms- its not his fault he's got this to work out- there are also two teachers who are retiring that they aren't replacing due to not having any money. Im trying to be philosophical about it. And since I hate it here anyway, I'm not losing sleep over it.

The thing is, I'm 'moonlighting' for another company right now, and I've been given some pretty solid hints about full time employment with them. I haven't signed anything yet, though I've filled out tax forms so I can get paid for my moonlighting work- I'm on the books with them, but not fully employed. It's sort of a halfway situation.

If that falls through, I have my resume out to another company downstate- but that would require serious and immediate relocation, since it's an hour and a half away, and that sort of commute would be a ball buster. I also have no idea what they pay for an entry level tech.

So while I'm still working right now, I'm also in transition with an 'almost certain' and a 'maybe' job lined up.
Of course, if junior wasn't on the way, this wouldn't be as complicated, but what the hell, why would anything ever be simple?

I think I could stand in front of a mirror and watch my hair turn gray right about now.

Oh yeah, 'livejournal'

Shut up.

But, things will get better... I have "hope" for "change"...

What exactly do you do at the school you work at? I thought you were a teacher of some variety.

If you relocated, what city would you be in?

Work is scary here as well Reb. Don't freak out, it's not like you have a baby on the way or something ;)

Reb are you near Jamestown? If so, I could really use your help. Just go into the engine plant there and smash a bunch of turbos so they have to order more and I can go back to a 5 day work week. Running Cummins engined vehicles off the road and burning them would help as well. Your choice, every little bit helps. Thanks ;)

A lot of schools are probably having to tighten their belts in light of actual budget cuts or perceived shortages. One of the principles in our local system is retiring at the end of this year and rather than replace him, they are resplitting K-12 into two groups instead of 3. Basically, once principal will have K-7 and the other will have 8-12.  I think it stems from cuts at the state level.

Sorry to hear about your position being cut. If they are anything like the school here, they will miss you.....very quickly.

Sucks.  But at least it sounds like you are better off than some.  In a backwards way, it was a good thing that you didn't like your job, since it motivated you to look at alternative.  Otherwise you'd be starting looking from zero now.

But keep on keepin' on.  You have experience and a valuable skillset, and they can't fire that.

Niq, I work as an in house computer technician, but I do so much more than that- from creating and submitting state reports for the special ed department to managing the voice and data network, and so on. With the exception of maintaining the web page, if it needs to do with computers, its me.

Johnny, I'll see what I can do.

The fact that I've had something 'kind of lined up' for a while now keeps my pucker factor pretty low for right now, and I understand the budgetary concerns that schools have to go through, so I'm not really freaking out too bad. But, still, there's the nagging little voice in your head that says "What if" despite any real life opportunities.

Thanks Reb. Just tell me if there's some way I can help. Since you're not a teacher, I can't just make kids stupider or something.

I am not having a case of the mondays, I'm just saying that phrase sucks.

Hmm.

The boss wants a letter of resignation from me to present to the board, but I'm a little confused....why would he want a letter for a job that's being cut? I'm starting to think the board doesn't even know that my job is on the block, he can tell them 'look, a saving, and I didn't have to axe anyone!"

Why NiQ? Why?

Reb, since you hate the job, have fun with the letter. Don't actually resign, just write nonsense:

I Reb, destroyer of worlds,.....

or my favorite hate mail:

My complaint about Mr. Superintendent
Once again, I am writing in response to Mr. Superintendent's smears, and once again, I merely wish to point out that Superintendent's actions will cause more harm than good. I urge you to read the text that follows carefully, keeping an open mind, from the beginning to the end, and without skipping around. I further recommend that you take breaks, as many of the facts presented will take time to digest. He likes to imply that everything he says is entirely and utterly true. This is what his modes of thought amount to, although, of course, they're daubed over with the viscid slobber of asinine drivel devised by his yes-men and mindlessly multiplied by shiftless vandals. The picture I am presenting need not be confined to his harangues. It applies to everything Superintendent says and does. Accordingly, I have had to restrain myself from rebuking him more vehemently. And that's why I'm writing this letter; this is my manifesto, if you will, on how to listen to others. There's no way I can do that alone, and there's no way I can do it without first stating that it's a pity that two thousand years after Christ, the voices of pusillanimous, lazy weasels like him can still be heard, worse still that they're listened to, and worst of all that any one believes them.

Every time Superintendent tells his spin doctors that those of us who oppose him would rather run than fight, their eyes roll into the backs of their heads as they become mindless receptacles of unsubstantiated information, which they accept without question. Now, I'm going to be honest here. If one accepts the framework I've laid out here, it follows that I appreciate feedback and other people's views on subjects. I don't, however, appreciate feedback when it's given in an unprofessional manner. If you are not smart enough to realize this, then you become the victim of your own ignorance. Superintendent is trying to create profound emotional distress for people on both sides of the issue. His mission? To take us over the edge of the abyss of defeatism.

The really interesting thing about all this is not that the lockstep ideological conformity of his worshippers and their mindless parroting of his jaded cliches about extremism have reached a level of absurdity hardly matched by any historical example that comes to mind. The interesting thing is that if natural selection indeed works by removing the weakest and most genetically unfit members of a species, then he is clearly going to be the first to go. Even when Superintendent isn't lying, he's using facts, emphasizing facts, bearing down on facts, sliding off facts, quietly ignoring facts, and, above all, interpreting facts in a way that will enable him to palliate and excuse the atrocities of his lickspittles. He is addicted to the feeling of power, to the idea of controlling people. Sadly, he has no real concern for the welfare or the destiny of the people he desires to lead. I cannot promise not to be angry at Superintendent. I do promise, however, to try to keep my anger under control, to keep it from leading me -- as it leads Superintendent -- to blame our societal problems on handy scapegoats.
Many of our present-day sufferings are the consequence of the expansionism-oriented relationship between him and neurotic mafia dons. There's really no other conclusion you can reach. If you want a better opportunity to get a job, raise a family in a safe neighborhood, have a better chance at a good education, and lower the taxes on the money you earn, then I ask that you help me advocate social change through dialogue, passive resistance, and nonviolence. The law is not just a moral stance. It is the consensus of society on our minimum standards of behavior.
Let's be realistic: Superintendent just keeps on saying, "I don't give a [expletive deleted] about you. I just want to lead us into an age of shoddiness -- shoddy goods, shoddy services, shoddy morals, and shoddy people." So we're supposed to give him permission to devalue me as a person and hope he's rational enough not to do so? How incredibly naive! His communications are not an abstract problem. They have very concrete, immediate, and unpleasant consequences. For instance, the most anti-democratic bohemians I've ever seen, almost by definition, hurt people's feelings. So let him call me irresponsible. I call him irritating.
Here, too, we can see how it may seem difficult at first to plant markers that define the limits of what is sexist and what is not. It is. But Superintendent doesn't care one whit about how others might feel. Sad, but true. And it'll only get worse if Superintendent finds a way to commit acts of immorality, dishonesty, and treason. My general thesis is that his "I'm right and you're wrong" attitude is indelicate, because it leaves no room for compromise. I'll talk a lot more about that later, but first let me finish my general thesis: You should never forget the three most important facets of Superintendent's conclusions, namely their bad-tempered origins, their internal contradictions, and their tendentious nature. Superintendent maintains that his opinions represent the opinions of the majority -- or even a plurality. This is hardly the case. Rather, there is growing evidence that says, to the contrary, that he wants to dig a grave in which to bury liberty and freedom. Personally, I don't want that. Personally, I prefer freedom. If you also prefer freedom, then you should be working with me to shine a light on his efforts to blame those who have no power to change the current direction of events.
Put simply, to get even the simplest message into the consciousness of soulless chuckleheads, it has to be repeated at least 50 times. Now, I don't want to insult your intelligence by telling you the following 50 times, but I have a dream, a mission, a set path that I would like to travel down. Specifically, my goal is to foster mutual understanding. Of course, if he wants to complain, he should have an argument. He shouldn't just throw out the word "incomprehensibleness", for example, and expect us to be scared. I myself like to speak of Superintendent as "salacious". That's a reasonable term to use, I think, but let's now try to understand it a little better. For starters, he is willing to promote truth and justice when it's convenient. But when it threatens his creature comforts, he throws principle to the wind. With friends like him, who needs enemies? I mean, Superintendent's perorations manifest themselves in two phases. Phase one: talk about you and me in terms which are not fit to be repeated. Phase two: force his moral code on the rest of us.
Superintendent dreams of a time when he'll be free to prevent me from sleeping soundly at night. That's the way he's planned it, and that's the way it'll happen -- not may happen, but will happen -- if we don't interfere, if we don't detail the specific steps and objectives needed to thwart his baleful little schemes. I've always thought that we are now stuck with a dangerous nepotism bearing a human face -- that of Superintendent -- and hearing the rubbish that he spews forth proves it beyond all doubt. I am not up on the latest gossip. Still, I have heard people say that violence, mayhem, and insanity are the inevitable consequences of his cajoleries. Am I aware of how Superintendent will react when he reads that last sentence? Yes. Do I care? No, because he would not hesitate to transmogrify society's petty gripes and irrational fears into "issues" to be catered to if he felt he could benefit from doing so. Superintendent's bons mots have been a millstone around our neck for quite some time. In view of that, it is not surprising that if you ever ask Superintendent to do something, you can bet that your request will get lost in the shuffle, unaddressed, ignored, and rebuffed. Almost without exception, he is not only immoral, but amoral.
As my mother used to tell me, "Superintendent's bromides are made of the same spirit that accounts for the majority of the problems we face in this world." It would be charitable of me to state that Superintendent has a vested interest in making me lose heart. Fortunately, I am not beset by a spirit of false charity, so I will instead maintain that "brazen" is his middle name. To pretend otherwise is nothing but hypocrisy and unwillingness to face the more unpleasant realities of life. Still, if you read his writings while mentally out of focus, you may get the sense that he is the best thing to come along since the invention of sliced bread. But if you read Superintendent's writings while mentally in focus and weigh each point carefully, it's clear that we must overcome the fears that beset us every day of our lives. We must overcome the fear that he will get on my nerves. And to overcome these fears, we must restore the world back to its original balance. A great many of us don't want Superintendent to feature simplistic answers to complex problems. But we feel a prodigious societal pressure to smile, to be nice, and not to object to his malignant insinuations. In all fairness, he would have us believe that those who disagree with him should be cast into the outer darkness, should be shunned, should starve. Yeah, right.
Simply put, in asserting that his wisecracks are Right with a capital R, he demonstrates an astounding narrowness of vision. It is as if we were safely on the bank of a raging river, enjoying a picnic with our friends and family, when a bunch of deplorable airheads came along and threw us into the river. Not only must we must struggle to avoid drowning in the raging torrent of Superintendent-sponsored nativism, but we must crawl out of the river before we can bring fresh leadership and even-handed tolerance to the present controversy. Lastly, I can't end this letter without mentioning that we must stick to our guns and not let Mr. Superintendent convince us that he knows 100% of everything 100% of the time.

That does smell fishy.

Or not.  In better times, it is polite to let people quit their jobs to avoid the stigma of getting fired.  These days, there is no stigma associated with layoffs.

So either he is trying to be nice, or there is something fishy.

Johnny, it's going to take me some time to pick through all that, but I'm working on it, many, many lols thus far.

Bruce, the one thing that I'm concerned with, is that a resignation would make me ineligible for unemployment should none of my prospects pan out, much less any severance that might be available ( I don't think there's any, but I don't really know)

I just don't get why I need to resign from a job that's not going to exist anymore.

i also don't know how to tell the guy to cram his letter in his nether region if I decide NOT to write the letter.

No, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Live" is better...as long as the recipient knows about Monty Python. You'll know immediately, as they will begin to whistle from the song.

I'm not really planning on getting unemployment, because I'm crossing my fingers for one of these two positions to work out, but just for kicks, I called NYS department of labor, and they laughed at me when I told them what was up.

I'm not resigning- I'm being effed with.

Not sure how NY works, but here in OH, you can still collect unemployment even if you have another job. Say for example, you are working part time at one and full time hours at another. If you get canned at the full time job, even though you have one or two other jobs, you still can be eligible for unemployment. Personally, I think anyone who would actually do this is a loser, but I have seen it done.

I would keep the option open because if you get one of the other jobs and it doesnt last the minimum to be eligible, I think you can still go back on your old job. I could me mistaken.

Yeah, it sounds uber fishy to me. I think someone is trying to pull a fast one on you.
