Being that I've been handlin' and lovin' the 98 Custom for a while now I'll vost for the 98. It depends on your choice though. In my opinion both guns offer most of the same thing considering their upgrades. The A5 off the shelf comes with the cyclone feed but a cyclone feed can also be added onto a 98 too. The 98 is a little cheaper and may be a little more reliable. Which is "better"? That's a tough choice for me. I guess the A5 may have 1 more advantage seeing as it can probably be dissasembled quicker. If your looking to buy one of the two though, I guess the 98 is cheaper in price (not quality IMO) but the A5 comes with the cyclone feed for faster firing rates. If you NOT looking to upgrade a trigger go with the 98.

I would go with the 98. I have both an A-5 and 98 and prefer the 98 anytime. It might just be my preference but I am not satisfied with my a5. I like the 98 much much better.
A lot of the decision of which gun to choose, is preference. Which you prefer, not what other people prefer. Go try to play a game or to shoot a little bit with both guns. And choose the one that you like best and suits your needs. Edited by K Hop - 11 February 2009 at 5:22pm |

I used to have a 98 and bought an A5. I personally like the feel and the performance of the A5 better. I would suggest seeing which one feels better in your hands for starters. if one feels off now it will later too.

i went with the a-5 with a response trigger system and a j&j and a apex barrel so i can get the feel for both barrels to decide which one i like best...spent a total of $420 with the gear and everything to go with it and extra playing clothes and extra co2 tank a thermal mask etc.

let me know how well the apex works with the response trigger. The flatline chopped so much did not like playing with it much. running a jj with the r trigger. great barrel

well to choose between the two, consider these:
98 a-5
non-removable trigger frame removable trigger frame
machined fore-grip removable foregrip
grav-fed hopper cyclone feed
5-8 balls per second up to 15 balls per second
open bolt enclosed bolt
shoot less shoot as much as you want
doesnt work well with full auto works with any firing mode
these are just a few things to name about each gun. picking the right gun depends on how you like to play.
do you like to stay and hide in the bushes and wait for the enemy to come to you? sniper with the 98C
do you like to use as many shots as possible to hit someone between 10-20 feet away? fire away with the a-5
prefer functionality over looks? go with either, but the 98C likely has less upgrades for looks though
all about Mil-Sim not caring how it shoots? go with the a-5, because it has more available body kits from many more places than the 98C does now.in earlier years availability was about the same.
just some things to ask yourself about how you play your game. those questions should help you make your decisions.

The 98 has problem with full auto? Why's that? Mines worked pretty good for me thus far.

bad batch of paint or bad paint in general. the cyclone is not one to use cheapo paint on.

actually the cyclone is great with cheap paint. I've shot cases of monsterball with zero breaks. But, you can't hit a tree with it... As every ball goes a different direction.
The more brittle the paint, the more breakage you will get with a cyclone. Harder shell paints (like cheap paint) typically work better. Add a flatline or apex and you make the issue even more pronounced.
My first gun was a 98, but after I picked up an A-5. I quit using the 98 and finally got rid of it. I prefer the feel of the a5. It fits my hand perfect, and to me is well balanced.
Like someone above said, its a personal preference thing. I have looked at the x7 a lot, but it just feels cheap to me... The A-5 feels most like a real gun.
But, it does take some time to dial it in. The lighting rod upgrade makes a huge difference as it will cycle the cyclone at much lower pressure once you replace that cheap plastic push rod with a nice aluminum one.
Here is some video of me using mine. There is also a bit with a guy with a 98 on there too... But, he gets blasted.

ok when i say cheap it doesnt include monster. their shells are so thick they are outlawed at my local fields lol. some cheap brands are very brittle but as you go up the line the shell tends to thicken. Also as said before, the batch may have been bad too.
