So I can't seem to find a strait answer, do I require a passport to take a international cruise leaving from an American port, and returning to American Port?
I know it would be wise, but I'm in a slight pinch on time. Any one know? |

I was talking to my girlfriend the other day about the topic of cruises, and we both came to the conclusion that for some reason they just don't seem that appealing to us. Neither of us knew why, they just seem weird. I guess it is just the whole being stuck on a boat for so long thing.

I think you only need a passport if you intend to leave the cruise ship at any point in between leaving and arriving at the u.s. ports?

I too am not a big fan of cruises.
I have no clue about the passport thing, but you should check the FAQ of the cruise line. Carnival's says: http://www.carnival.com/CMS/FAQs/New_Passport_Requirements.aspx

You didn't used to have to have a passport if you were leaving from and returning to the same American port. I beleive they changed it though and now, you do need to have a passport if your cruise is going to a foreign port.
It normally takes several weeks to get a passport, but they do offer an express service. It costs considerably more, but you can get a passport within 1-2wks.
And personally, I like cruises. My wife used to work as an agent for a cruise company and I got to go on few cruises with her. Pretty stress free. Edited by oldpbnoob - 12 March 2009 at 1:52pm |

Yes, you need a passport, drivers license proof of birth, ect.
And if you get off the boat anywhere along the way, you need these items to get back on the boat...
They have a new "mini" passport that can be used for situations like this, but I forget what its called...
It is much faster to get than a "real" passport.

The full implementation of the WHTI (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) requirement is scheduled to take place during the summer of 2008. The date is yet to be determined. However, U.S. citizens should be aware of the following dates:
This is a change from prior travel requirements and will affect all U.S. citizens entering the United States from foreign countries.

Don't do a cruise man. None of the places you stop are remotely "authentic" until you get like, 100 miles from them. If you're going to rock unauthentic why not go for an all inclusive resort? Pools, activities, oceans, swim up bars, beaches, not on a boat.
I'm sure you have to have a passport since it's typical of a cruise to stop along the coast and let people off to buy shirts and hats |

I literally just got back from a cruise. We didn't need a passport to leave the US, but they prefer it. We did need one to get back into the US.
Choop is right, the places they take you suck for the most part. Tourist traps selling diamonds and expensive watches. Although, if your stops are in nice areas it is fun. Also, the boat itself is basically a 5 star resort. I literally only went to the ports because I wanted t-shirts. /4 days late |
