Putting a 4 cyl detroit 2 stroke back into a skidder and if you know anything about diesels, when you start them the injector pump is held wide open then returns when the engine starts to run. Got the engine in, bolted up, torqued, radiator in and filled it up. Went to start it and the pump did not return to an idle position so it was stuck on full throttle... HOLY CRAP having a run away 2 stroke diesel 3 feet away from you is one of the scaryest things ive come across. Sounded like it was going to explode.
Lesson learned. Make sure everything is going to work correctly, and have a 2 foot by 2 foot square of plywood handy when starting a diesel after maintnence. |

Indeed we always have some plywood laying around but most the time the vehicles on lifts.
My brother has had a Car spring come loose from the clamp, hitting him in the chest, good thing he's huge if it was me, I'd be dead... working on cars can be very... very dangerous. |

Would have needed more than a pair of pants, would need new coveralls too.
This skidder was not in motion, in neutral on its first start WOT, only muffler so to speak was a spark arrestor. One hell of a scary experience. Working on heavy equipment and commercial trucks is a little more dangerous than cars. |

We do work on commercial trucks... and vans... and pretty much anything else that needs to be fixed... but we don't work on tractors if that's what you mean...

If you started it and the throttle was stuck wide open how'd you stop it? just go back and turn it off? no fireballs or small craters?

When you turn off the key on diesels like this nothing happens, the key only turns on accessories if you have them and trips the starter solenoid.
You have to manually pull a fuel shut off which didn't work or block off the supply of air with a board. No fireballs or craters thank god. When a diesel is running away at 3500 rpm and something blows its something I dont ever want to experience. |

LOL yep been their done that only with a 6v71 rather than the small 4 banger.
Used to work in a shop specializing in the old two strokes. Had my share of em on the dyno too. was a fun job but the pay was poor so i moved on. I have worked on everything from the 471 all the way to the 8v92T(i LOVE these things). Top end sets were never much fun on those thing anyways esspecially the V motors. I actually know a guy (fix his work truck) who has a 1980 Kenworth he uses for show And truck pulls. He runs a modded out twin turbo 8V92T. Thing is putting down 850hp and god knows how much tq. Get to go to the races as the on had wrench for the event. Will tak picks come summer if he gets it running (having a hard time getting injectors for it). Its too bad all the two smokes are going away now only place ya see em now is older construction equip and the odd busses. ON a good note Detroites new engein the DD15 is a COOL little beast. I am the Detroit and Cat guy for my shop and went for training on the new motor a few months ago. Things pretty cool cant wait to see one at work. It has a reg turbo but after that the exhuast goes to a turbine that threw a fluid clutch and trans assists in turning the flyweel adding about 50hp to the equation without burning ANY extra fuel neat idea hopefully it works well and does not add too much headechs down the road. |

We just rebuild a V8 detroit at school, after listening to it and playing around with it, I want to build a 4x4 around one of thos beasts. Even if I do end up with a 4 cyl it will be awesome having a 4x4 with a screaming jimmy.
At school we also have a hayes HDX with a original V12 Detroit... one hell of a truck That turbo with a fluid coupling and trans sounds like it will be problematic |
