I was reading this story about the recent Nielsen time-on-site rankings for the top 30 news Web sites.

I still cannot comprehend how the New York Times site manages to keep an average time-on-site of more than half an hour.

Who is sitting down and reading a news Web site, or any Web site, for that long?

I rarely find myself at any Web site for more than 2-3 minutes at a time, other than this site. Does that make me weird?

.

No, I think you are, for a lack of a better word, a power user online. A lot of people in our age group, and geeks of any generation tend to have a sort of ADD online. You probably also always have many tabs open at once when you're on the computer, and cycle amongst them constantly. (I just sat down at the computer for a minute over lunch to check email, and am working 7 tabs).

However, I watch my parents and other family members, sit on their computers, have only one tab open at a time, finishing what they are doing, before moving onto another site.

Interesting. I'm the same way as Whale and Shub. I usually open a few news stories, the forum, digg, and facebook at the same time and switch between them, close one story, open something else.

Am I reading the article wrong, or is that monthly?

Quote Nielsen defines time spent as the average time spent per person at a site during the month.

I think I read a lot more articles than the average NY Times reader, and I doubt I spend more than 20 minutes on the site over the course of the day.  Although, I do keep the tab open ALL day, so that may change it.

If you keep a news site open but are browsing different tabs, does that still count as time spent on the news site? If so, I probably have hours and hours on BBC News.

As for other tabs, I've got Facebook, forum, Stumble and Gmail open most of the time.

I use an google's RSS reader to read news stories. So I get all the online newspapers I follow in one place. My time on that is probably ridiculous.

Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos.

Yeah power users will certainly operate differently. Think about how many morans still use IE. IE doesn't even have tabbed browsing (I think?) that us power users rely on.

IE 7 and 8 do have tabbed browsing...honestly, IE isn't too bad anymore. I do still use Firefox, however.

All I care about in my browers is reasonable speed, tabbed browsing, and Adblock Pluse. (aka. Firefox)

In as much as compliance standards, IE blows. However, that is a headache for web developers (which I do some web dev work on occasion, so I know the headaches involved). When I said IE isn't bad, I was referring to things like security...IE 6 was a downright hazard to users, as it was simply badly broken by vulnerabilities by the time IE 7 rolled around. IE 7, and moreso 8, are *pretty good*....I mostly meant things that concern the end user.
