Yesterday i bought a Spyder Xtra Custom. I haven't been able to find any specific info online about the Xtra Custom, however, with some help from people who have owned Spyder markers i have come to the conclusion that the best way to describe it is it is a mix in design with the Sonix 09 and the Xtra 09 with what so far i believe to be just stock everything else.

My question is, should i stick with this gun or return it (i havent shot it yet) and get the 98 custom platinum pro. I've heard that the 98c  is more durable, reliable and more customizable, but depending on what i would want to customize, I would be putting a lot of money into it. I have also heard that a simple accuracy problem in either gun could be fixed with a longer barrel so that would not be a problem. I've heard that a spyder stock gun would be better than a tippmann stock but that the spyder will be harder to clean than the 98c.

I'm new to paintball and this is my first gun, so i am no expert. These are just things ive heard about both guns and I'm not sure what is true and what is not for the markers. I'm just wondering if you guys have any thought to which gun is better for me to start out with (this is my first gun), and what (if any of this) is true. Please Help!

Thanks

well i own similar markers. I have an 04 blue spyder xtra, and a 08 98c platinum. I have upgraded both. for the spyder (my first marker) i put a 14 in jj ceramic, RAP4 CAR stock, green shocktech long bolt, new springs, with a grav hopper and a hpa tank. the 98 i put the same barrel (but have the stock, new flatline, 18 in rifled RAP4 barrel), saw stock, cylcone feed, new powertube, with camo wrap and use a remote (for both) and the hpa tank (for both) and well i like both of them. I can shot a little faster with the spyder (since it has a double trigger and is really loose) but the 98 is more durable (less prone to gremlins getting into it) and has more customization, up to you, check out specialopspaintball, opsgear, and RAP4 (not for their tac. markers but for the aftermarket parts like barrels/stocks/etc.) hope this helps

I also own both, and i have to say, hands down, the spyder models are a metric crap-ton easier to clean than any of the tippmanns i have worked on.  First, the 98 has two states of apart-ness; 8 'field strip' screws to get the ting in two pieces, and all 8 screws, plus two more on the powertube, plus the airline into the power tube (which needs to be resealed before the marker is reassembled).

The spyders 'apart-ness' is also a two parter. Most basic, ONE codder pin...full access to bolt/hammer (basically everything after the main valve).  Full dis assembly adds two screws for the grip, one for the front of the main valve, and one positioning screw for the valve itself.

My two cents says that the spyder is easier to clean, and is also ALOT more air efficient.

The 98c, well, its like a Saab, they will run great, but if it breaks, its not as quick and easy to fix as chevy.

I've also not really had all the 'gremlins' that some say plague spyders, just take care of her, and she'll take care of you.

thanks guys.

If anyone still has any tips, facts, or opinions about either of these guns please mention it, i still have not made my final decision cause im gonna sleep on it and keep the spyder in the box for another day. Its my first gun and its killing me to just want to open it and get to it, but i want to make the right decision. Thanks for the help.

What about the Spyder MR1s I'm planing on buying a slightly used one for a backup and something to switch it up with... are they just as good as a 98c?
