So my girlfriend is living in Utah with her Dad at the moment.  He and his new wife have gotten into this program called "Impact Training", basically a type of group therapy and motivational program.  He convinced her and her sister to go to the first of their seminars and he would help pay for it, since it cost several hundred dollars to do.  The program lasts about 4 days and tonight was their "graduation".

From the beginning she was telling me she was unsure about it and how people she knew felt it was fishy.  Some of her friends up there had friends who went through it, or tried it themselves and didn't feel ok about it. The classes were almost all day and very intense so this morning was the first I heard from her in a few days, and tonight I finally had a chance to talk to her. When we spoke she was in a very good mood.  Like, unnatural good mood almost.  Her and her sister, who haven't really ever gotten along were getting along perfectly and were much closer. It was really weird and I was a little unnerved, especially since she was dead-set on going to their next seminar which would cost $700, and shes already really tight on funds.  Not to mention she refused to talk about what happened in there, and they were all strictly forbidden from telling anyone what the program involved, since it would "compromise the effectiveness of the program on the individual".

About 30 minutes ago I got a call from her, and her good mood was completely gone.  Suddenly she was very tense and uncomfortable.  Apparently her sister caller her boyfriend and one thing led to another and he suspected the program was no good.  He then described how brainwashing works and the way programs do it, and they were both freaked out since he managed to describe the program perfectly, without any information from them.  Her dad is hoping they will help convince the rest of the family to do it and now they are both worried sick, since their grandfather and brother are both set to do it soon.

A little bit of digging shows the program they took (called "Quest") is based on this gem.  Their website is here

Needless to say, I got that creepy-crawly feeling all over right now.

TL;DR : My girlfriend and her sister were almost enveloped in a cult/brainwashing program.

See if you can stage a musical street rumble between them and the scientologists.

Yup, he actually said that.

Theres a place across the street here in the mini-mall that has something to do with like "Vision Network" and they ALWAYS have their blinds close and give talks in there at night. I think the same thing, or a pyramid scheme is going on.

The Mormon faith has a lot of good stuff to it, and there are a lot of good people in it, but for whatever reason they also seem to attract a lot of nuts who go for crap like this, or just make the rest of them look creepy.

Choopie, wouldn't be surprised, I didn't really realize these groups were so common.  Its freaky how easily they can scoop people up by promising to help improve their lives.

I was going to make a Christianity joke, but thought better of it.

On that note, I love how feeble the average human mind is. How can you NOT want to manipulate it?

We live in a society that's captivated and brainwashed by a talking box in their living room. Nuff said.

I think we've moved from talking boxes in the living room to interactive boxes we take everywhere.  I would say people are far more influenced by the internet and its trends then they are by TV.

Case in point: Moot made Time's most influential person.

Sometimes I fantasize about cutting ties with modern society, moving into the woods and just going mountain-man. Unfortunately, that's just not how things work, though I try to stay as old-fashioned as I can...

You mean because they rigged the poll?  Please.

That said, the reliance on TV and the internet present in modern society should scare all of us.
