Take a look at the comments on this page.

Just a warning, this a long rant with no tl;dr. If it's too long for you to read, you probably won't care about a summary anyway.

Bear in mind the subject matter of the page is irrelevant-I barely even read it. Public opinion on the legitmacy of government is of little significance to me because a:) only the minority of this country votes and b:) our people (even the educated ones) are so out of touch with the political system it's nauseating.

I'm using these comments as an example of what I absolutely detest about the political system. Or, rather, the American people and their concept of that system.

Basically, it's just a massive collection of political rhetoric and stereotypes being thrown back and forth via labeling and party bias.

This country seems to only be able to think on party lines any more. They're not only ignorant and poorly informed, they're militant to spread their misinformation.

This is right and left alike-if you argue based upon political lines, you're a moron. If your response (and I've been guilty of this in the past, and likely in the future as well) to a problem involves ad hominem attacks and straw man arguments based on generalizations, you have no political voice, rather than to go baaaaaaa on command.

Again, for most of you this is probably irrelevent and boring, but there's a few on here that I'd love to get some feedback on this. Not that they're guilty of it, just curious.

I liked this one:

Quote

Let's see, the Republicans started the Patriot Act, NCLB, wire tapping, spending like drunks, increasing our deficit, started two wars and have generally been incompetent while pushing 'smaller government.' Now, the Dems have to clean up the GOP mess, deal with Republican obstructionism, lies and deceit, and deal with their own spinelessness. Yep, we're screwed.

That's the best description of current politics I can find, Reb.

The size of the government alone isn't what makes the eradication of rights easy, it's how easily that size is manipulated by the crazies out there.

Very true.

Part of this is the danger in trying to combine pop culture with politics. For years both the Republicans and Democrats have attempted to dumb down their messages to reach an increasingly less educated class of people.

So they've created celebrities-such as Palin, or to a lesser extent Obama (let's face it, alot of Obama supports you talk to on the street have no idea what he supports or is against)-to feed off these lesser idealogies.

Politics is a puppet show. Someone in those comments made a very good point-political orientation is insignificant. Government wants to G-R-O-W. It's like a plant, it needs to become larger. It sees itself as the answer to a question no one asked.

I said in a previous thread that the battle isn't between the political parties-that's become a smoke screen of sorts. The people are convinced that if they support left / right things get done.

The battle here is preserving states' and individual rights. Keeping every last one of those amendments in tact is vital. The constitution works as a massive connect the dots of rights. Privacy, for instance, is an implied right that the Supreme Court interpreted through several amendments, including the third and fourth. However, if your patty can convince you even one of those rights are worth sacrificing, you may fail to see the bigger picture that the whole Lego set can collapse under that one right.

Agh, I'll stop. I guess I'm just really fed up with the idiocy of what used to be such am awesome country. It doesn't help that I consistently deal with morons on a daily basis through work and school, lol.

Like I said

I think you don't realize that this country has been dealing with morons who don't understand the need for rights since it's inception.

I'm pretty sure we'll make it through anyway.
