The M44's finish was looking pretty rough and I needed something to do during my spring break, so I decided to refinish it and add a scope.  I ordered the scope and mount kit last week and started sanding Friday night.  The scope is a Simmons Prohunter 4x.  The mount is from S&K, very sturdy.  For the finish I used a spar urethane.
Before I started

Disassembled

Beat up original finish.

Sanded

First coat

Finished

Scout mount on the scope. I like.

Yup, he actually said that.

Please tell me you didn't sand down so far as to remove the proofing stamps on the stock.

Also, you couldn't get a PU type scope mount and scope? BAH!

You mean this ?

Also, a PU scope/mount would require me to bend my bolt handle 90 degrees.

That's one of them. Mine has about 20 stamps in total, I've even got the USSR cartouche on mine rather clearly as well. Kinda rare that one.

I hope you weren't serious about drilling and tapping the thing to attach a copy of an out-date scope on an incorrect rifle. Scout scopes are reversible modifications in case M44's are ever worth anything.

I like it, it looks good.  It should make a good deer rifle.

Took it to the range yesterday to sight in and found out something interesting.  The rear sight base is crooked, which makes the scope crooked to the point that I can't make up for it by adjusting windage.  It was off probably 1.5-2 feet at 25 yards.  Angry  So it looks like I have to find a used sight base that isn't crooked and have some more work to do.  For now the irons are back on.
