I've got a set of old irons that I play with, I can't hit a driver or a wood off a tee to save my life. I'll tee off with a 4 or 5 iron and save myself the embarrassment (and strokes) of slicing into the woods.
They're really old, I played with them when I was in High school. I don't play often enough to justify spending the money on new ones, but at the same time, If I had clubs that better fit me, I'd play a better game and probably play more often....its a nice little quandary I'm in. I'm anxious to play this year. I didn't even swing a club last season. |

A cheap set that fits you properly. My clubs are quite a bit too short for me. you probably won't need a full set, just a driver a couple of irons, a pitching wedge and a putter.

my suggestion if you have a decent golf shop go there and have them work with you on finding one of thier used sets that fits you well..try a couple more used sets and then remember the names and check out ebay or craigslist.
i would get a full set just because you will want to practice hitting all of them.

Just find a set that you feel comfortable playing with. IMO, even though a pro-shop could "size" you, for extremely recreational play, you may just want to go to a sporting goods store and find whats comfy for you. I need new clubs this year, just can't keep using the old ones, they're too short :( |

If you're looking for a new set of clubs go to a place like Golfsmith or what not that has a big selection of used clubs. Find some irons that fit you and the nice thing about stores like that is you can try and hit some balls with them. Once you've got irons get a 3 and/or a 5 wood and a putter, and perhaps a wedge for short play. You don't need a driver, as a beginner you can knock the ball with a wood with less frustration than a driver will provide.
That said my bag contains: Cobra SS 427 Driver Taylor Made RAC OS2 Graphite Irons Two random sand/ high angle wedges that came with the irons, bought used Putters a Ping, it gets the job done. I played a ton when I was at school, 12 bucks for 9 holes and a cart, which made it less frustrating to suck ;). But I plan on playing this summer too, its more expensive however since I'm back up here, I might play some par 3 courses to shake the dust off my iron game |

Just played a round on Friday. Awesome! Had to knock the ice off of my clubs (literally) because it was so cold after each shot the ice froze to the club.
In my bag: TaylorMade Burner Driver TaylorMade Woods TaylorMade rac OS irons TaylorMade putter. Yeah I'm a bit of a TM fan boy...what of it?!

TaylorMade driver
offbrand 3W PING irons Fun-land putter (literally stolen from a putt-putt course) My brother borrowed my putter about a year ago, still hasn't returned it. I can't wait for the ground to dry out here. Some really sweet twilight deals. I don't care for hybrid irons either. I can't hit them. I am perfectly capable of hitting down with an iron, so its no biggie anyway. Edited by The Guy - 23 March 2010 at 5:00am |

Clevland HiBore XL Draw driver, 10.5*
Affinity 7 wood, with a 3 or 5 occasionally. My 7 wood is my go to club - easily my favorite club in the bag. Knock-Off Callaway X-20's. Supposedly they use the same materials and design as the real thing. And their fitted to me. Adams Gap/Sand/Lob wedge, in whichever configuration I feel like that day. Random mallet putter - I think I got it for $30. Does me well until I get an Odyssey :) Not a fan of hybrids, either. I had a Taylormade Rescue... I just couldn't hit the thing. What kind of clubs can you recommend against home invaders?
Cheating spouses? Unruly children? The minority couple across the street? |

I golfed one time last year, for the first time ever. My friends are big into golf, and wanted to get me to try it...my friend's dad had an old set of lefty clubs, so they managed to drag me out onto a course.
I'll be honest, I didn't get the appeal. I'd rather spend an afternoon at the pistol range. |

I played for the first time last summer and I loved it. I went with 3 friends who golf quite a bit and they tried to help me out, but I've played baseball for the past, i don't know, 11 years of my life. I have a baseball-esque swing. Also, my 9 iron hits to farther than my driver. I have no clue why. I tried other drivers too.
I used my dad's set of mostly knock-offs and raffle winnings. Some of the irons were way too short for me. |
