I'm paintballing on a real field for the first time in a couple weeks, and I'm not sure what my gun shoots at. I don't want to get in trouble if its too high or anything. I heard the place I'm going to gets pretty pissy about it if its too high. I can't afford a chronograph right now, so I'm wondering what to do about this.

I have a Tippmann 98 Custom, btw.

They should have a chronograph at the field for you to check your velocity on.  (After all, how will they "get pissy" about your velocity if they can't measure it?)

you misunderstand. When they chronograph, if you're over 300 they get pissy. I've heard of them kicking people out because of it, actually.

no, you misunderstand. :-) Ok, here is out it goes. Before you get on the field you will shoot your gun at their crono station. if it is too high, then you adjust it and re crono until it is shoot at their required FPS. While on the field, if they pull you aside and crono your gun and your shooting hot, then they get pissy and kick you off.

Edit: Also. it is best to chrono your gun at least 3 times a day if using CO2. Morning, Middle of the day and end of the day. You fps will change due to temp change. (among a million other reasons) so at a minium to be safe, chrono your gun at least 3 times a day. Some fields require you to chrono Everytime you step on the field from the dead box. Though those fields are few and far between. I have been to some fields and am shocked to see that chronoing your gun is more like an "option" than a requirement. I avoid these fields. I personally carry my own chrono so i can be safe. Hurting people or getting hurt is NOT part of the game

^^^ Splatmasters have been around a long time. (The problem back then was the 12 gram CO2 cartridges.  Everyone had to fill their own from their exhaled breaths.)

Mack the trick was to eat a lotta beans and use gas that exits another place. Made paintballs rifle acurate but the smell gave you away.

What exactly does a chrono look like, and how does it work - i can imagine the setup THEY have, but how does a small personal one work?
Thanks.

A small one just looks kinda like a stopwatch. It uses Doppler to track the speed of the paintball.

Thats why its also called a Radar range. You can see one here hanging around the neck of my Ref jersey.

^^^ A simple link to a pic on the net would have provided a more useful (larger) picture.  Posting the picture above just looks like an excuse to post a pic of how much stuff one has in order to look cooler than the rest of us.

Very well played sir.  Clap

Thanks for the pic. Now I know what it looks like.
Are there particular brands to shy away from?
Suggestions for purchasing one?

There's not really that many choices out there.  The one pictured is quite effective.
