    Posted: 18 March 2010 at 10:46pm
So I've been reading around and noticed people like the J&J but most prefer the 14" barrels over 16".  I've been playing recreational paintball for about 10 years but have only recently purchased my own equipment and was wondering about upgrading my 98 Custom Platinum.  I've already bought the 16" J&J ceramic and was wondering if I should have gone with the 14".  I'm also wondering if maybe the flatline barrel was a better choice.  I've got plenty of money to spend on this sport so I guess if I change my mind I can do so but I wanted to know from the rest of you what input you have on this matter.

So I have a few more questions but the above was my number 1 concern.  I'll let you know what I'm playin with right now.  I have a Tippmann 98 Custom Platinum, 16" J&J Ceramic barrel, Standard hopper, 16 oz CO2 canister, and an RT trigger.  I've been wanting to put a collapsible stock on the marker and I'm definitely going to be adding a cyclone feeder to my marker for the RT trigger.  Ok so my question is that...should a cyclone feeder be a concern of mine?  And is a butt stock a good addition to my marker or is that preference?

That's it for now and thank you in advance for all your help and support.

Tested out the Cyclone Feeder and liked it and also a Compressed Air tank.  Now I own both.  Thanks for all the responses......

Can you let us know what you thought of the 16" J&J barrel, particularly vs the stock barrel, and also  whether you compared it to the flatline?

Thanks.

JJ 16 will have no performance difference over a JJ 14 on your 98. The flatline will increase the range greatly but also sacrifice accuracy.

A stock is a preference, as are most upgrades to your marker. Most stocks make the marker more stable but you cant aim down the sight without a riser rail or a certain stock. If you have a buddy with a stock and a similar marker see if you can try it out for a game and see what you think.

Try to be patient, unlike many of the other forums out there today there are only a handful or two of regulars on these forums. And not all of the threads are always seen right away. Usually you will get an answer to your question in a few days.

Also try the search feature. The forum has been around for several years and has a wealth of topics including almost anything you can think of. Search for something specific; like flatline performance, or 16" vs 14" (which is a very popular question), or stocks, or HPA vs Co2.

Also, be polite. No one wants to help someone who has posted something rude or sarcastically. Though many of the regulars can be pretty sarcastic, they use it for humor.

Hope I could help.

I'm assuming the original poster of this thread is long gone, however...

Kopkins is correct about the Barrel. The extra 2" of barrel will not give you any performance increase. In fact, You will not notice a performance difference between an 8", 12", 14" 16" ect. barrel and the different lengths are mainly for the different positions in speedball. Longer barrels allow people in back to push the barrel into the bunkers and shorter barrels allow people up front to be able to move around in small spaces.

So you think that there would be absolutely no difference between an 8" vs a 14"? or just minimal differences?

I'm looking for accuracy only.  The shorter the less unwieldy it is for me, but I was looking at a 14" because I thought there was SOME difference.

Thanks.

ive got a j&j 14" . i personally wouldn't want it any longer. kinda wish i got a 12' because of the length after the j&j apex adapter and apex. i was out shooting most people in hell the other day. putting paint on point and from distance. and the apex is fun...way fun. setting 8 gives the ball wings. i fire on ppl with flat-lines who think their outta distance. make em scatter.

When a paintball is fired, only about 8 inches of barrel are needed to stabilize the paintball before it leaves the barrel. So any quality barrel 8 inches or above will have about the same performance. The longer the barrel, however, the more gas is needed to push it out. So shorter barrels are more efficient; but because of the design of the tippmann valve the same amount of gas is used per shot under most circumstances.

I use 12" and 14" J&J barrels and have the J&J Edge Kit as well. The J&J barrel on a 98 custom is excellent but with bore sizers like that in the Edge kit, your accuracy will increase dramatically no matter your barrel length. Some people use longer length barrels because it helps them point the barrel better while aiming and also helps them poke thru the brush in woodsball. In the case where you have already purchased the 16" J&J, you might consider the TechT IFIT Kit (www.techtpaintball.com) which offers the widest measure of sizers available. You can call them and get the whole kit of just the ones you need. Over the past 18 months paintball manufactureres havee decreased the size of paintballs dramatically. I used to use ,689 and .691 sizers regulaly but now use .685 and smaller. I am using DXS Blaze paint when I have a choice but when I am using field paint I have to use even smaller sizers like the .683 or smaller. Its just what going on in paintball right now. With the RT dialed in correctly, you might also need the TechT Zero Kick Hammer to reduce the kick which also helps maintain your accuracy. I have an early 98 Custom RT and these upgrades made my tippman a force to reckon with on the field. I, also, added a felt tip with a center hole cut out to cover the face of my valve reducing the metal on metal shock and noise. Lastly, I covered the hole of the cocking handle with the BT Sealed Bolt System (like the Rocket Cock) but fits flatter.

I use a Revolutions hopper that I got before the Cyclone feeders came out and it has always worked perfectly with the 98Custom RT. Hope this helps in your drive to upgrade and enjoy your 98 even more .
If you have any questions, just let me know.

Oh, I forgot to recommend the first thing to do is to polish your internals qs this helps and smooths the basic operation of the marker and helps with all of your future internal upgrades.
