    Posted: 02 June 2010 at 4:47pm
Is the low pressure kit discontinued? I cant find it anywhere on the tippmann site. Why is that? Also, I keep reading mixed reviews on it. Can anyone clarify for me the way the Low Pressure kit works and why I wouldn't want to use it? It would be used on my 98 Platinum that I just bought recently and Im looking to upgrade it as much as I can to enhance its performance. I keep reading that its a hassle to instal the LP kit and that the bolts in the 98's would break a lot due to the LP kit. Are these old issues? and have they been fixed? Last thing that I can think of, do i nowadays need a second regulator for the LP kit? or is that again an old issue and can I simply buy a HPA or N2 tank and screw it into the gun without anything else? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Johnny

This kit is discontinued, primarily because it only provide slight enhancements and the cost was more than the actual marker.  The only reason I ever saw to use them is to cut back on the recoil of the marker.  When using CO2 (despite what others say, they can handle CO2), it did allow for a bit more consistency.  But other than that, it just wasn't worth it.

Just use the marker as it was intended and don't worry about putting every single upgrade you can on it.  All you really need is a good barrel and a way to make it consistent (meaning a decent regulator for CO2).  THEN, work on the addons, such as sights, stocks, etc.

But is there a point to upgrading to HPA/N2 on my 98 Platinum if I don't have a LP kit? or will I still benefit from it even without the LP kit?

Also, and sorry if this is a dumb question but is it possible to have both the Low pressure kit and the Expansion Camber on the 98 at the same time? and would there be a point? and lastly, if I put a Low pressure kit on my 98 am I stuck having to use HPA/N2 or can i still use Co2 safely even with the LP kit on and not have it damage anything? or would I have to take the LP kit off to use Co2 again? Thanks for any help. Its greatly appreciated.

Actually, if I am not mistaken the LP kit will not fit the Platinum, making this a moot question unless you want to swap out some of the internals from an older model.

Has to do with the fitting in the valve. As mentioned, it really isnt worth it.

So its easier to use a 98 basic to put the LP Kit on? Because I'm looking to make my 98 more efficient on air and paint and improve accuracy a bit if i can while running on N2. And i heard that you gain all of this from an LP kit. So would it be better to have a 98 basic with Cyclone, LP kit, but no ACT than a 98 Platinum with ACT, cyclone, but no LP kit? Thanks for all the help.

They no longer produce the 98Basic non-Platinum from what I can see, they only make the Platinum. Even the Ultra Basic is a Platinum, which has the different valve/powertube/air connection that will not work with the LP kit. You would have to purchase a NOS 98C pre Platinum or buy a used marker to use the LP kit. OR you would have to remove/replace the valve/powertube (if I remember correctly) and replace these with ones from an older model.

I have not owned an LP kit, but every post and/or reveiw that I have ever seen, essentially said it isnt worth it. It's going to cost $100+  for the kit and/or replacement parts to convert it.  Unless you don't have access to air fills because you are playing renegade ball in your neighbors woods, it simply isnt worth the investment IMO. You would be better off just buying an additional tank. If you are concerned about running out of air during a game at a commercial field, you are shooting WAY TOO MUCH. Just make sure you top it off before each game.

As far as accuracy, as mentioned probably 1000 times on this forum.. best accuracy is gotten from good paint to bore match. Buy a barrel kit. However, consistent propellant pressure will also aid in accuracy as the shot to shot FPS will be more consistent, thus putting the balls closer to ball on ball, thus making it more accurate. This is best acheived through upgrading to HPA, as the out put pressure it better regulated due to the more stable nature of HPA over CO2. If you want even better conistency, looking into putting an additional regulator betwee the air source and the valve. This will allow you to better control the input into the marker and you can adjust lower until you get a pressure that operates the marker. However, if you are running an RT trigger, this can work to your disadvantage as the RT AND Cyclone both operate on excess air/gas vented or blown back from the valve. Increasing the efficiency usually involves reducing the blowback, thus reducing the ability for either of these to work. By the time you reduce the pressure enough to be more efficient, you may make both inoperable. In other words, you would really have to fine tune it and fiddle around to figure out the happy medium between efficiency and starvation. However, if you run the regulator high enough to continue getting both to work, you would still have better consistency, as the additional regulator would insure this. So better consistency would help in your accuracy. Palmers makes good regulators that should work in your application.

thanks oldpbnoob for all your help. last question. I know that low pressure would allow for more consistancy and also give you more shots per tank. But is there any other benefit to gain from low pressure? The reason I'm asking is, since i cant use an LP kit on my 98 PS do I still benefit from the same consistancy at high pressures from HPA than high would from the low pressure? is the the only difference at this point the amount of shots per tank? or am i completely misunderstanding the difference between high and low pressure?

Is it better for your gun in general to use low pressure?

All an LPK does is lower the pressure that the marker operates at. It does not add consistency. Consistency is gained by the propellant and/or regulation of the PSI input. HPA is more consistent due to the nature of the propellant. CO2 works by expanding from a liquid to a gas, thus creating pressure. This expansion rate is affected by such things as temperature, humidity, BPS fired, etc. HPA is constant. It is simply pressurized air. It is not affected by these variables, thus it is more consistent.  HPA tanks have built in regulators that take the pressure from the tank, 3k or 4.5k psi and regulate it into the marker, typically 650+ for high pressure markers and <450 for low pressure markers. Tipmann markers, excluding the Phenom, all work on High Pressure. All you are doing by adding an LPK is to make it work on Low Pressure. Some argue that with the LPK, you get more shots per tank and less kickback, but is it really worth it for the $100+? IMO, no.

Define better. Does it make your marker last longer/decrease wear and tear? Not that I am aware of. I have had M98 markers that were probably 10 years old when I got them. All you had to do was oil them up, put air in and they were ready to go. 98's are built like tanks, it will last way beyond the day you lose interest in the hobby.

Thats exactly all the information I need to know except for one thing and Im sorry if you answered it and I missed it. I understand completely the difference between co2 and hpa thanks again for that info. And I understand now and completely agree that I shouldn't  get the LPK. Now, all I want to be clear about is that if I am already gaining all the consistency I want/need by simply switching from co2 to HPA why choose to use Low pressure over High pressure or vice versa? and what are the benefits?
