If it's going to finish us off, I hope it gets a move on it.

I do not want to spend the last 2 years of my life enduring the smug "I told you so"s from the 2012ers . . .

Sorry Gatyr, gotta burst your bubble:

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2010/0630/Oily-rain-and-cracks-in-the-earth-Busting-Gulf-oil-spill-myths

The article you posted specifically speaks of cracks opening up on the sea bed because of the spill, which is patently false. The zone around the well is extremely stable and isn't in any danger of cracking any more, collapsing, or releasing enough methane to do us all in. Furthermore, Gregory Ryskin's theories on methane die-offs are linked to far more catastrophic events than a leaking well or explosion on a drilling platform. Generally speaking, massive volcanic eruptions, massive earthquakes, or even asteroid strikes have triggered the methane releases that Ryskin describes. Furthermore, the release is almost instantaneous which is why the methane and water remain mixed, and thus heavier than air. The well hole simply is not big enough, even when combined with the naturally occurring cracks in the sea floor to cause a release of the magnitude Ryskin's mass extinction theories require.

And here I was preparing my underground bomb proof lair to dwell in and copulate with young Pakistani girls for the next 25 years.

Thanks Tallen... Thanks allot.

A smaller methane release, as described by Tallen, would have the potential for lower concentrations of the gas which would cause irreversible brain damage in those who were exposed to it for long periods of time.  Depending upon the nature of the brain damage we could very well end up being attacked by hoards of exposed victims from the coastal regions who were driven to madness.

In other words, Zombies; but, without the fear of becoming one from their bites.  (Of course the downside is that many would retain the faculties to reason and use weapons.)
