Quote 4 arrested in S Africa with low radiation device (AFP)

10 July 2010, PRETORIA - Four South Africans were arrested in the capital Pretoria for trying to sell a low-radiation industrial nuclear device, police said Saturday, insisting the incident had no link the World Cup.
‘Four people were arrested, all South Africans, they were trying to exchange or sell this particular device,’ said Musa Zondi, spokesman for the elite investigative unit known as the Hawks.

‘It’s not World Cup related at all, it’s just a crime,’ he said.

They were arrested Friday at a garage in a sting operation that included a police helicopter, he said.

The origin of the device is still under investigation, he said. Pretoria is a major producer of nuclear medicine used to treat some cancers.

‘As a device, it’s harmless unless someone opens it and even then, you would have to sit on it for hours’ to be at risk, Zondi said.

‘It is out of circulation, people were arrested, investigations are ongoing, so there is no need to be afraid,’ he added.

The four men will appear in court on Monday, he said.

Police are still investigating if the men had links to any international network. Zondi declined to comment on whether the device could be used to make a ‘dirty bomb’.

Everyone knows when trying to sell a nuclear device, the first thing you ask is "Are you a cop?"

Second thing everyone knows is that nuclear medicine and industrial nuclear devices are bad for you

Mind you, Cherenkov radiation is simply awesome to see.

Who exactly is the stupid here? The guys selling the radioactive device? The cops who caught them? Or the sensationalist reporters?

Incidently, the SAPS operate two types of helicopters. The Eurocopter AS350 for monitoring with a FLIR unit, and the BK117 for troop insertion. So this story could either be really worth mentioning, or really not :)

The headlines for the last couple of days have been about "dirty bombs" and the like. While it is conceivable to turn this into a dirty bomb, an easier method would be to secrete the whole unit somewhere, or break it open and disperse the contents manually. Like at a football stadium.

I'll happily admit I don't know the security protocols for the SWC, as I've been working the ATC side of it, but I don't know how far up the list radiation scans of the building are before a match.

I know they say it isn't SWC related, but it's the easiest place at the moment to get a bunch of people to be in a confined space for hours.

Rolf, I'm fairly sure Pretoria was around a little before Family guy :)

PS on the ATC side of things, record movements for FACT the other day, 109 movements in the TMA in 1 hour. Woot.

I think you answered your own question in one try Kayback!

Actually, the title of the thread was just an attempt to get you to weigh in and represent. I guess it worked!

You guys forget this is where kayback lives. Where you need two handguns, 3 knives and a hand grenade just to get the News paper off the lawn. While American Police Choppers looks like they are transporting tourists, I guess South African Police Helicopters look like Airwulf or Blue Thunder for those who remember 80's TV and Movies.
