So I figured I'd just make a thread about this, since I keep getting "WHAT?!" style questions in chat and whatnot.

Yes, the gf and I broke up on Monday after 3 years, 9.5 months. It was about as mutual as you could ever want a breakup to be. We were in Dawson City, Yukon (google map it) for a music festival. We got there on Friday (my 23rd birthday, go me) and had a good time listening to music, drinking beer, eating a burrito. Did the same thing on Saturday, but re-united with some friends I hadn't seen in 1-5 years and drank a bunch in the beer garden/ a hotel. Went to bed around 5am or so.

On sunday afternoon we were talking and she asked if I ever felt like we were more like friends than a couple. I'd been thinking about that the day before, so I told her. Obviously thats a big red flag, so we had a long serious talk about the last while and how things were going, etc.
We decided to sleep on it and see how we felt in the morning. Sure enough, woke up feeling the same.
So, we continued talking, and both just sort of realized that we were pretty much just friends, and the relationship had fizzled/ died.

The drive back from Dawson is about 5 hours, which thankfully wasn't awkward, but was instead insanely helpful. What other breakup do you have 5 hours together to just sort of talk things out and figure out answers to questions/ feelings. At one point we actually felt bad that we didnt feel worse, because mentally we KNEW that it was right.

So that's pretty much where I am now, mentally I'm doing really well and still know it was right and that we wont be running back to each other, however we obviously still have some feelings, and theres lots of habits that are hard to break after that long/ living together.

I've got a new place with my friend (I lived the same place for 2 years a while ago) so I've sort of landed on my feet, I just dont want to go buy a bed.

Anyways, this was longer than I wanted it to be, but I figured this way everyone knows the news.

Now..........post your......coolest hat.

Choop, IMHO, you're girl should be just as much a friend as she is your lover. That said, there still needs to be a spark in the relationship, so best of luck with that.

Good for you guys for being mature enough to admit that things weren't working.

Lots of people (myself included) have pusehd dead relationships until they became sources of bitterness and contention. Sounds like you did the right thing.

Of course, I didn't start to hurt until a couple of weeks after my fiancee and I broke up. But once it was over, it felt good to have a new beginning and get away from the staleness that our relationship had become.

Yeah, I'm starting to question if it's just not sinking in fully yet, or if we were really that right about it. Just gotta remember things realistically, not just idealistically, keeps your decision feeling right. Nights and mornings are by far the hardest parts of the day, but during the rest I'm pretty close to normal. I spent the evening packing most of my stuff up, and will finish the job tomorrow. Have a friend coming to hang out after too which will be nice.

I fully agree with you, and thats why we lasted as long as we did, we were really great friends. However, exactly, the spark just sort of fizzled, and we didn't clue in for a while.

It's funny (not literally funny, but ironically funny Smile), every friend I've got that I talked to when I broke up with my girlfriend said the same thing you just said. The nights and morning SUCKED.

I remember I went to stay with my folks for a couple of weeks to deal with everything and sort my life out, and things were great in the day time. Then all of the sudden I'd go to bed and everything would just be really quiet. But that wears off fast, and you'll be stronger for it. The main thing is just be confident in your decision, as hard as that is sometimes.

My dad gave me some great advice-the time right after you break up with someone is the most introspective time of your life. It's miserable, but when all is said and done you come out of it twice the person you were when you started it.

In any case, I hope things go well for you.

Yeah, I had a few days in whitehorse with my family, which was helpful. She's out of town camping with hers now, so it was almost good timing?
