I have always wondered this since Tippmann introduced the A5 with Procarb threads.
From a manufacturing standpoint, I understand why Tippmann started using the M98 thread after using the slipfit and Carbine threads. Using the machined thread found in the PC would have jacked up the prices in the sandcast M98. What I have always wondered though, is why didnt Tippmann use M98 threads in the A5 and later markers? Since the barrel adapter was already machined, it wouldnt have required reinventing of the wheel to use M98 threads. The Carbine thread could have died in 2004, and hundreds of thousands of dollars could have been saved if the A5 had M98 threads...
But no, there are now three markers using M98 threads(98/AB/PS), and three using Carbine threads (A5/X7/X7P). Brilliant marketing.
