My friend has a EEE that I've used extensively. I love the thing.

Why a netbook when you can get a real laptop for around $300?
My last one I purchased (refurbished) was a dual processor with 2 gig of ram and 17 inch screen and dvd writer for $279 with windows 7.
They tremble at my name...

#1 Refurbished
#2 17in =/= 10in

I wouldn't mind refurbished but this is a gift for my dad for Christmas.

BTW, this is the one I've used quite a bit. Asus has a damn good portion of the market on netbooks:

*EDIT* Best Buy is apparently not a fan of hotlinking to their site or something, so just go to their site and search "Asus EEE."

The first one that shows up is for $279.

I used it a ton for field reporting. I'd highly suggest a USB mouse for it, as my fingers had a problem with the kinda smaller-sized trackpad.

It also comes with Windows XP, which I'd rather have on something that small as opposed to Vista/7. For about $330 you can get the same model but with Windows 7. I think it runs a lot more laggy that way, though.

I don't know of any netbooks with more than 2 gigs of RAM stock, so running Windows 7 will give you a nice slow day if you decide to go that route.  Or you can pay more to upgrade.

1GB is plenty to run 7.  The problem with running 7 on a netbook is the CPU.

Watch slickdeals. They pop up on there for a steal. They just give you links to super sales people find.
Also, you missed black Friday....

The netbook my mother had gotten was terribly laggy when it originally came with W7.  A fresh install of W7 to remove all those junk programs seemed to do it absolute wonders though.

I have an original Acer 9" netbook. I use that thing all the time...it's a workhorse. It has the 1.6 GHz Atom and 1 GB of RAM and I installed Win7 on it, and it runs just as well as it did with XP.

Admittedly I don't own a netbook, but small memory is the problem people have been telling me about.  When I start Windows 7, it uses 1.2-1.5GB itself.  Granted, it might be different for someone not running 7 Pro.

I have 7 Enterprise.  It may be able to use more memory on startup, but 1GB is enough to boot quickly.

I've got a 900 EEE PC, and I installed a stripped down version of XP on it, and that thing is the bomb.

It goes everywhere with me. My Laptop lives in my living room. I don't think I've EVER taken it out the house but the 900 and my Kindle follow me around.

A fresh install doesn't even take that much. Also, is that before or after superfetch starts loading programs into RAM?

As of right now, 7 is using 30% of my memory.  Which is 1.2 GB.  It was installed yesterday morning.  There's another 30% being using up by games and Firefox.

I've got an HP 210-1170 got it for around $270. 1 gig ram with w7. 250 gig HD. For browsing and word processor it functions great. I have a 17" laptop and desktop for real computer needs. Hated carrying around an 8 pound laptop.

^ Yeah, a 17" laptop almost isn't portable. It's nice having that big screen when you're on the machine, but it feels like carrying a large pizza box around with you.

I have a 15", and I'd say it's just about maxes out what I'd be willing to carry.  My dad has a 17", and I don't think I could fit it into my backpack, which is kind of necessary to take it anywhere.
