Hi all,

I'm relatively new to playing paintball. I recently bought my own gun, a refurbished Tippmann 98 Custom AK Tactical-Edition with ACT, from an online seller on amazon. I bought the Tippmann brand because of its reliability, even when put under different situations. The thing is, when I received it, it came in poorly packed package. Plus, when I opened it up, it was really beat up. Most of the screws and bolts have rust on them, and the whole thing isn't necessarily dirty, it looks like it.

So, I have 2 courses of action that I can take.

Ask for a refund, in the next 8 days, and get around $90 back.
Or, fix it all myself. Remove the rusted bolts and screws, and open it up and replace any parts that are rusted/broken.

Thoughts?
Yes, okay.

At first I was conflicted, with the answer to give. Then I though about was I would do in you shoes.

Personally, since the option is avaiable, I would return it. Here is A few reasons why:

I assume the poor condition the marker is in is worse than the used condition you were expecting. Also, since the marker was shipped/ packaged less than what you expected, obviously the previous owner had very little regard for it and you may eventually find the marker may develop unexpected problem in the future due to the lack of matinence and care. Dont get me wrong, Tippmann products are known for their durabilty, but no marker can survive forever in that condition.

I guess my biggest reason to offer the advice to return it is because in the condition you mentioned, to me, I do not see you getting you moneys worth.

Others may disagree with me and while I have purchased used markers it isnt often, mostly because I would rather buy new than inhert someone elses problem.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

If you decide to keep it, do not hesistate to call Tippmann's Customer Service number found on this website. They have legdendary customer service.

Please forgive my spelling and grammar. Typing on tiny smartphone keys and didnt proof read.

Good luck!

Yeah, i'm leaning more onto that, since it came in packaged in a box, wrapped with a burlington coat factory and walmart plastic bags. I did NOT pay $10 for the shipping to be in this shape.
The only thing I'd have against returning it would be the price, plus the specific model - since, the ak 47 kit would also be an extra $80. I asked the seller whether it was under warranty, and he said it was under warranty for a year, or so.

Anyways, do you know where I'd be able to buy the specific gun, along with the AK 47 kit? I don't want to buy the kit and the gun separately, you know?

Thank you for the warm welcome, I'll be here a while.

I re-read your original post and realized that I may have jumped to an answer too quickly.

More things to consider:

It has always been the standard that to deterimine the used value of a Tippmann marker, add all the new prices of the marker and upgrades and divide the figure in half. That should give a good ballpark figure. I would also subtract a little for the condition the marker is in.

Unless the marker has been used very little, it has been my experience that the paint on Tippmann markers will bubble, peel, and easily tear off if left exposed to moisture: While this doesnt help the marker win any beauty contests, it wont affect the markers performance. Also a Tippmann marker can be repainted.

On the the rusty screws, the is my biggest concern for you only because I have never experinced it. It could jus be that they can be easily swapped out with new ones and problem solved or it could be an indication of something worse. For you, i hope it is the former. I am puzzled why if this marker was sold as refurbished the seller did not address the screws. To me using the term refurbished indicates that the marker had somthing wrong with it, the seller fixed it and is selling it as a good working product.

It is nice the seller is providing a year warrenty. Do you lose any money if you do return it? If so I woukd factor that loss into the decision also.

Originally, i was under the impression (due to my too quick of a skim of you post), that this was a stock 98c and didnt feel that marker in that used condition was a good deal. However after now seeing this marker is upgraded, do the math and see if you think it is a fair deal. If the only issues are cosmetics and replacing rusty screws this still may be a good deal for you. If you feel comfortable with fixing this markers issues, then by all means, go for it. Luckily repairing Tippmann markers are very simple and not alot of hassle.

As for good sites to look for good deals, I have heard the buy sell trade section of Pbnation or ebay are good places to start, Hopefully other member that have more experience buying used will add their two cents shortly.

If you do end up keepin the marker, leave seller feedback on amazon about you dissastifaction with the shipping. Please made sure to do this on the sellers page and not the product page. It annoys me to no end when products are give mne star on the product review pages only because the item wasnt ever delivered. That isnt an issue with quality of the product, but I digress.

Good luck, hope this helps a little.

Well i'd keep it, and I'd check out Tippmann's YouTube channel and other videos on maintanance of the Tippmann 98 Custom. I recomend that you invest in some Marker oil, and some Orings and that you go over the internals of the Guns. I have tippmann guns that are still on original internal orings.

work on your marker in a well lit, flat surface. Be carefull when working with the Power Tube and Gas line, the plastic power tube can be easily stripped. Check out the Maintanence and repair sections here and I recomend that you get a better barrel. J&J and Lapco Big Shots are great affordable barrels. And get some serrious Trigger time. (the X-7 AK front sight looks awesome on the 98 Custom AK's)

Hmm, so, it'd be a better idea to keep it? I'd be able to afford a new one, but i opted to buy a refurbished one because it's a lot cheaper, plus its my first gun. I'm really not sure if the marker works, since I haven't bought a CO2, and a hopper for it. I'm only worried that it won't work, due to the lack of any care with the shipping.

I dont think the shipping would cause the marker to not work. I am more afraid of the rust being an issue.

As long as the rust is external, you will be okay. Best thing to do is see if it works. If you have a locol proshop they might let you test i there.

I just bought a .68 carbine and I was wondering if anyone knew if this gun is compatible with the parts of a 98 and a A5? I need a folding stock for it will either the A5 or the 98 be compatible with the .68 carbine?

You may get a better response if you started your own thread rather than jacking this one.

As for the OP, it's a toss of the coin. If the marker airs up and seems to operate fine, it's probably a keeper.  For $90, seems like a fair deal. If it has any issues, return it. Keep in mind that if it doesnt operate correctly, you'll have to troubleshoot it which can sometimes be a hassle for new players. Tippmann markers are pretty simple, so there really is only so much that can go wrong, the most expensive of which is having to replace the valve which would run you $30+.
