A soldier was murdered during a game of Russian roulette at a party in a private home in Eagle River, Alaska, police said in a statement.

The 26-year-old, from a brigade at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson was shot in the stomach at 2:07am local time Sunday, the Anchorage Daily News reported late Sunday.

He was taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center but was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Achorage police charged the soldier's friend, fellow serviceman Jacob Brouch, 25, with murder in the second degree over the shooting.

"At some point in time on Saturday, the two men began drinking and posing for photos with a revolver belonging to Brouch. Eventually the gun-play resulted in a game of Russian roulette," police said in a statement.

"Detectives say that the victim was holding the gun to his stomach when he accidentally fired the weapon."

Brouch was charged with murder for "knowingly" providing the weapon that resulted in the death of his friend.

The dead soldier was originally from North Carolina. His name was withheld until his next of kin were notified.

The incident is the first murder that Achorage Police Department have investigated this year.
