Thanks to the iPad, the tablet craze has taken off. You have two iterations of iPad, several high end Android devices and scads of Chinese built, low end Android tablets. Up until a couple of months ago, my mother appropriated my brother's G1 phone to play games on. Watching her do that pained me, so I found a MID tablet with Android 2.3 installed on it. Nothing special. 7" resistive screen, wifi only. Purchased a 8GB flashcard for it as well. She loves it. She doesn't even get on the computer for email anymore. That kind of surprised me. I can't imagine not using my laptop or desktop on a daily basis much less using a tablet in place of them. My Mom just uses it for games and email and maybe a little browsing.
So, I guess my question - are tablets a viable tool that you would use or do you see them as more of a status symbol gadget? If you did or have purchased one, what do you or would you use it for?

I already have one. For the most part it has replaced my very out dated desktop.
Mine runs Android. It has 2 usb ports, hdmi out, two speakers, mini usb port, wifi, micro sd card slot (camera (which I dont use)), It is nice to just power it on in ten seconds and proceed to check my email, watch a movie or tv show, read comic/pdfs, browse the web and be mobile with it. I am satisfied with it. For my needs and what I use it for it works for me. It nearly fits all of my needs. |

I got a DroidX2, which has a 4.3inch screen, and honestly that has taken over my usage. I don't really use my ipod touch anymore and my laptop is mainly used for college stuff and watching Hulu.
And even then, my phone has QuickOffice on it, so a lot of times in class Ill bring up my excel/word documents and such on my phone (I store them on Windows Live SkyDrive and open them), instead of printing all the pages. You can even edit them to a certain degree. The only time I check my email on my computer is when Im already doing something on it and I can just click since it keeps me signed in. I feel my phone fits my current lifestyle perfectly because I dont really need the main features of a tablet, which I feel is a more laid back, entertainment laptop-replacement. AND it fits in my pocket!

Bought the Asus eeepad for Erin last month. It runs the latest version of Android Honeycomb, and was reasonably priced. It also has the option of a docking station for even more battery life (it already has 9 hours) USB ports, and a full keyboard. As God said, they're great for e-mail, browsing, .pdf functions, etc. Not something you'd want to replace a "work" computer with, but for the most part, it can replace the average laptop in a household that has a current desktop PC for doing things like work at home.

I don't take my laptop to campus anymore except if I need to write code or analyze data.
WebOS doesn't do a good job of working with the Blackboard (a common educational website) system used by our school, so unless installing Android solves that I will be stuck carrying my laptop home with me. That said, the Ipad seems to be significantly better from a software standpoint, so it may not have these issues. It's just too far out of my price range to say. My sister and brother-in-law bought one, I'll have to try it out against my Touchpad when I get home. |

That is it right there. Price is a big thing for me. Is it worth what I'd use it for? My sister has an iPad and loves it. I'd like nothing better than to have a Galaxy Tab, but I really don't want to pay more than $250 for one. It will be interesting to see how the release of the Kindle Fire will impact the prices of the other tablet makers. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled.

I have a decently high end lappy and an iPhone, never really felt the need for a tablet.
I'll probably end up with one though. |

Yesterday during a study group someone mentioned rooting a Kindle to turn it into a computer tablet and that the Kindle is much cheaper. If rooting a tablet is anything like a smart phone it should be easy. In a way I enjoy intentionally holding myself back in the technological stone age but this "tablet" thing people speak of has me curious. |

I'd rather just use my laptop... I like a big screen (my laptop has a 17 inch) and I have used ipads, but the tiny type on many web pages, just makes it too cumbersome for me. I don't want to scroll all the time... And I like to have tons of stuff open all at once... As I like to edit HD video while web surfing... No tablet can handle that!
I guess it just depends on what you do with your computer.

I am still generally uninterested in a tablet. I have my smart phone to check my email, or for that instance where I just want to check something quick online.
Otherwise, I prefer to use my desktop or laptop for my computing uses. |

They actually sell a microSD card which turns the Kindle tablet into an Android tablet. You take the card out, it goes back to using the standard Kindle software. My friend got one for his mom, and she loves it.

bought the original ipad when it came out and use it constantly...surprisingly it has a lot of great graphics programs for cheap that are a good supplement to the work you do on your computer...productivity wise, i use a couple apps for sketching and touching up vector graphics...i prefer using it more for web browsing while laying around the house and tv shows/movies look and sound terrific with a nice pair of headphones
