Getting a new apartment in a few months and the lady said that I can get a projector for it with my tax refund. How sad I have to clear MY tax refund through her.... Oh well...
Any who, I want to do gaming and screen size between 80" and 120". 3d option is a plus, but not necessary because she can't see the 3d. It will be in a living room so ambient light will be present sometimes. I found this one. Optoma's GT750EI don't require it to be short throw or long throw. And price range tops out at about $1600 So does anyone have any suggestions? Or does anyone have any experience with projectors for TV? |

I have a mitsi 1500, that I LOVE... Put it in about 3 or 4 years ago now. You really need to SEE the projector before you buy, as the "lumens" is a total scam in projector lingo.
my 1500 was "less bright" according to all the documentation than the 3000 model, and yet, side by side, the 1500 is WAY brighter when you look at the image.
Mine is 130 inches. Watching the super bowl on a 10 foot screen is incredible. Ambient light is a problem if you have windows behind or on the side. You really need to be able to control the light with a projector. I have mine in my basement, with the only windows/doors on the same wall as the screen, so there is no direct light, but mine is bright enough that even with all 50 lights on in my basement you can still see the screen perfect.
I did a thread on it years ago with my entire build on AVS forum. Only thing I did was add a playstation 3, but I sold it when the network went down...
projectors are amazing, I seriously don't know why people would buy a regular tv when you can get a projector system for so little money now.

I was looking into projectors to see how expensive they were a few months back and came up on a thing about bulb life. I've never seen a bulb go out on a projector for school, but was wondering if you used a projector enough for it to be able to go out in a few years time.

There are over 20 projectors in various rooms were I work, all the same brand and model, so I can suggest some general thoughts on projectors based on volume use. On second thought, there might be two different models throughout the building.
First. Bulb life - bulbs are rated for about 1000 hours. After that, its $450+ to replace it. Projectors even have a bulb life clock you reset to each time you change the bulb. Leaving bulbs on overnight eats the bulb lifespan like you wouldnt believe. Second, mount the projector far away from heating vents. One projector shuts down all the time due to over heating in the winter when the building's heater runs. Also, bulbs will overheat and explode, so becareful having it on for long periods of time. I had another point to make but it has slipped my mind. |

Projector TV's are the same as projectors you hang on the wall... And the bulb life depends on the model of projector you buy. My 1500 is a 2,000 hour bulb projector. I got about 2,400 hours out of it before I changed it (it still works, and is my backup bulb).
Pretty much any projector now a days has a setting on it that it will turn it off if not getting a signal in 5 minutes...
I've changed the bulb in my 62 in Hitachi TV 3 times since I got it, (about every year and a half). My projector I've put one bulb in, in the past 4 years. (I don't use it as much as my TV upstairs).
Bulbs are just like anything else, you can get them MUCH cheaper on Ebay.
here is one that would work in mine.
Don't buy stuff like that from dealers, as they just rip you off. Cables and projector bulbs should be bought online...

We have an Epson 2600 lumen projector in the basement that we got a pretty decent deal on awhile back. One thing I found is that while the HD cable feed is nice and crisp, the output from our Wii isnt great and the picture is kinda crappy. Especially after watching HDTV. We got ours at Office Max back in October. They had a sale where it was nearly 300 off the regular price AND they were offering a free screen. Worked out to around $550 or so for the projector and screen. Normally should have been close to $1k together. Woot.

Yeah, mine was like that too on the wii, when I first hooked it up, with the regular video cable that came with the wii.
But, if you get an upconverting media receiver and output your wii with a component cable (available on ebay for cheap) it makes a HUGE difference in the quality of the wii.

That was the reason I don't want a projector. Bulb life kills it for me. If I were to get one, it would be to replace a regular tv and I don't want to have to pay an expensive amount for a new bulb. It would be good for a basement deal for movie nights or playing games though.
