You know, one of my pet peeves is when games and movies use a "Russian" font which uses actual Cyrillic letters as stand-ins for Roman letters. It always throws me of because I'm like "Defcoi? what the eff is Defcoi?"

Russian always seemed like a fun language to learn. Mostly because I would enjoy yelling in Russian.
Although Polish would be a bit better for me, so I could insult one of my friends in his language.

I wonder how fast real ICBMs travel, because I was watching a movie from the 80s which had them flying over a big city in the West towards the Russians and it looked like they were traveling almost too fast.

Well, the movie would be completely wrong as ICBMs wouldn't be visible to the naked eye after they reached orbit. That's the whole point of an ICBM really, less fuel is needed to get them to where they need to go if you can put them into orbit and then drop them back out over their target. Considering they're being boosted into orbit, you'd need a lot of power and a lot of speed. ICBMs in their boost phase reach speeds of 7km/s. On re-entry, they reach around 4km/s (thought they were closer to 1km/s early on) The reality is you wouldn't even see them unless you were watching the launch. Remember, these things are lighter than a rocket carrying a scientific payload, so they're smaller and reach their necessary velocity much, much quicker. Edit: Also, the launch to impact test of a MIRV equipped Minute Man III from Cali to Kwajalein took 28 minutes to travel 6904.67669 miles. That comes out to an average of 246.595mpm or 14,795.5mph. Just look up ICBM launch on youtube. Edited by tallen702 - 15 February 2012 at 8:24am |

This pretty much sums it up, when I went and spent a day with my old man (works Rivet Mile) they were showing me the video's explaining the ICBM's. They are insanely quick. The doors blowing off the silo are even cooler though
