are there subways/trains that run from arlington to DC? how about a park and ride? Or would it just be easier to get a hotel down town dc? do they search your cars at the hotel? is there parking at the hotels?

Don't search your cars, but if you're asking that for the reason I think you are, it's a felony.

The Blue and Orange lines run from Arlington (Blue from Rosalyn and Orange from all the way out in Vienna in through the center of Arlington) Hotels are cheaper on the Yellow line through Alexandria and Crystal City than in Arlington. Also, it's easier to drive into and out of Alexandria/Crystal City.

Where are you trying to go?

Also, if you really want to make it easy, stay at the Crystal City Marriott and you don't even have to step outside to get to the metro. Big underground network of tunnels with shops, restaurants, even theaters. All interconnected. It's a bit like Seoul in that aspect.

a friend of mine is coming up from FL so we are going to hit the smithsonian and mall this weekend.

a buddy of mine went in to dc last year and told me his vehicle got searched at a bunch of parking garages he went to. i guess they were looking for bombs or weapons...

easier to just stay in va and run in for the day.

Stay in Virginia, and get an all day pass on the metro.

The metro is much different than the T or the S-Bhan. But we got around ok. One of the cheapest vacations I've been on in a while.

The problem I have with Metro is that every single station is done in that 60's brutalist architectural style. Sorry I couldn't hang out with you this weekend, but have been packing non-stop for the move next weekend.

No worries, maybe next time.

I kept getting off the train and thinking I left my hard hat someplace.

Hahahahahahhaa! So very true!

There's a Macy's department store down in my current neighborhood which was built around the same time as the DC Metro. Same architectural style of "concrete brutalism" I think it's probably the closest thing to commie architecture that I've ever seen.

I think they deliberately have left the big red star which is Macy's icon off of the building to keep everyone from thinking it's a run-down Soviet embassy.

Whatever school of design thought came up with concrete as a "fashionable" building material needs to be beaten to a bloody pulp.
