I reached my limit with Windows 8 tonight.  That OS managed to take a powerful gaming laptop with a 17.3 inch screen, 8GB of RAM, Nvidia GTX660m,  and a 2.4Ghz i7 quad core processor; and dumbed it down until it was as functional as a damn tablet.  I don't need my calculator to take up 1/2 of the screen.  A little window on top of my other windows is just fine.  But no, that's not an option.  So, i went ahead and bit the bullet and ordered an OEM copy of Windows 7.  This fresh install will also be a good opportunity to fix the idiotic partition this thing came with.  It has a 750GB HDD that is partitioned in to an "OS" volume and a "DATA" volume.  For some reason, ASUS decided that the "OS" partition needed to be 350GB and the "DATA" should be 400.  This effectively prevents me from having all of my movies in one place.  /rant

I have little experience with 8 thus far. Hell, the school I'm working at still has a ton of XP machines.

The company I used to work for had a program for controlling their HDMI matrices and they wanted to make sure that it would work with windows 8, so they bought a laptop, handed it to me and said "see if it flies." As soon as I verified its functionality, I wiped the machine and reinstalled 7.

Yeah 8 is pretty terrible. Microsoft is really alienating it's core (read: tech-savvy, business) customers with changes only it feels are appropriate. I get that they want to move into the future sort to speak, but they are really not going the right way with this. I work in IT for a large corporation and they are just getting 7 now. I could not even imagine the users calling in if they decided to go with 8.

Microsoft needs to realize that it's just not single people that have to jump over the learning curve of 8, but thousands upon thousands of business people that have been running a certain way for years.

Microsoft's issue is that they're stuck in a visually oriented innovation mindset. They feel that something has to look completely different to be innovative and "new" in order to sell product. What they should really be focusing on is creating updated versions of stable and intuitive operating systems rather than trying to re-invent the wheel every time they go around.

Why does '7' appeal to so many people? Because it's essentially a faster, more streamlined version of XP. Why did XP appeal to people? Because it was essentially a faster, more streamlined version of '98. Why did '98 appeal to people? Because it was a faster more streamlined version of 3.1..... etc etc.

As Rofl said, people neither want nor have the time to learn a whole new way of doing things in the business world.

Computers are a pain...

I'm still using my XP laptop at work, but I have a windows 7 laptop at home for my video editing. I also have windows 8 for it but I've never loaded it on... As 7 does what I want and works...
