I decided to have a new years resolution this year, which is to get back out and play paintball again. I am obscenely excited.

The last time I played paintball was I think 08/27/2009 and IIRC it was a short day playing outlaw with my friends from highschool. I'm determined to make Skirmish Invasion of Normandy this upcoming July. I dug out my first marker, a 98 Custom, and I am going to use that despite the plethora of other stuff I can use. My tanks are out of hydro, and my marker looks a lot worse than the last time I saw it, but I don't care.

The '98 is circa 2005 and was before Tippmann became Tippmann Sports and was still Pneumatics. No ACT or any of that nonsense. Over time I put an RT and cyclone on, made grips, and a few other bits. The hardware looks like crap, the ball detent is stuck down, the front sight spring isn't working so the cyclone is dangling, there is visible aluminum crorrosion in the chamber, and the paint is bubbling all over. I am going to go through the entire thing, repaint it, and make another set of grips. What paint should I use? I want to get a similar finish. This was prior to the "new" tough finish they introduced. I remember the choices when I bought it were black, silver, and realtree from the factory. You could also find chameleon M98s online.

I don't know what to do for tanks. I'll figure that out. I have a C/F HPA tank that is old. Do these things "expire" and can't be rehydroed? I think I remember there being a limit.

So many things to do. I'm so excited.

I'm in the same boat, having moved to Edmonton and seeing some nice places to play, including a brand new 100,000 sq ft indoor facility that was a 3 story office building.  I was thinking of getting a cyclone for my 98 and using the ugly flatline barrel on it, I also have an a5 with either flatline or apex.  The indoor field has 98's or BT's, 225fps for chrono and $20 for drop-in games.
Imagine there’s a picture of your favourite thing here.

Awesome.  I still play but not as frequently as I would like.  My team's field was sold and turned into condo's for the bastards in the Hamptons.
Innocence proves nothing

Duracoat or Cerakote will give you a nice, tough finish that will last. Basically any paint/coating for home firearms painting will do the trick. Otherwise, a nice enamel with multiple thin coats will treat you well.

15 years IIRC, with re-hydro probably being every 3 years for yours given the time period. The reality is that they last much, much longer, but DOT regs are in place due to transportation and rough handling of bulk gases and "exchange" tanks that take a beating. Newer tanks are re-hydro every 5 years, and I seem to remember that the DOT talked about upping the lifespan to 20 years, but don't quote me on that last part.

That said. I've played with a tank that's probably 3 years out of hydro for as many years recently as well as a new one that will be up for hydro in another 2 years. Most guys are too lazy to pull the tight neoprene covers down to check when filling. I'll send it out this year for hydro since it's been so long, but given that I know the storage conditions, that it stays decompressed most of the time, and visually inspect the exterior regularly, I've felt safe using it over the past few years.

I was so busy getting gear ready this spring and was worth every moment. Get some air and check for bad o rings before you hit the field. I had 2 full c02 tanks. Chrono connect mobile lite phone app is actually VERY close to the field chronos and can be used to diagnose low velocity issues prior to hitting the field and will shorten time at chrono. I can give you the ballistic coefficient that worked for me.

The big difference on the field that I noticed was less liberal slinging of paint and everyone wears bounce gear.   I got a high end empire shirt for cheap on pbn. Like$25.

Crossfire does an excellent job with rehydro sticker and adhesive and is not slopped all over and nasty but they may be hard to get in contact with initially.   Once he calls you back, he's ready.

I play quite a bit. You guys will love it! and I'm still using a factory Realtree A-5 from way back!

If I were you, I'd build a MonsterSpin barrel! The new style flatline and then tape mod an Apex 2 to the end! It is INSANE what you can do with this barrel. I came up with it about a year and a half ago, and have been using it since. With good paint it is incredible!

Here is a video I've been working on from this month at PB explosion. I got to play with Pistol Pete and Necro! Along with a ton of my fans. Yeah, that is weird having "fans" of my youtube stuff. hahaha!

The paint was horrible this day, most brittle paint I've ever used. You could drop it from 2 feet and it would break!

But, it was still super fun!

JC: 225 FPS?!? Might as well throw paintballs by hand.

Ceesman: The pitfalls of NY. Move here!

Tallen: 3 years isn't bad, I will look into doing it locally. The tank has been rehydroed once already. I think I have a 68ci/3k C/F, a steel WGP 50CI/3k, and a steel 48/3k that are all out of hydro. Unless they're aluminum, it has been awhile. I'm honestly considering just buying a 24oz or the like C02 tank. I would probably get more shots out of it, and minimizing trips to get my stuff filled is a priority.

As for paint, if this wasn't "my" 98 Custom, I would probably strip the paint with MEK or brakleen and leave it outside to corrode for a very, very weathered look.

Lightningbolt: This thing needs an overhaul. Good advice on the app, though.

FE: I currently use an Apex 1 on a JJ Edge elite kit with electrical tape. I like it. Flatlines are finnicky IMHO.

Krylon.  I've got one older 98 that has had to be repainted twice I've had it so long.  Given proper prep, the Krylon looks good and lasts 5-7 years before needing replacement.

Your steel/Aluminum tanks and CO2 are all 5-year hydro. The CF, like I said, is most likely 3-year.

Empire CF tanks (with 5 year hydro) are only $140 on Amazon Prime for a 68/45 if all else fails. I run a 48/45 on my Mini for quick speedball matches and it's great (though it obviously runs out quickly with a HP FASOR type marker with high rates of fire). Tanks have REALLY come down in price over the past decade.

I'm still behind the times on barrels though. Have yet to purchase a kit, which I really should do given that I'm all over the board with what brand and quality I use. Some days it's high-end, others it's white box. All depends on what marker I'm using.

Still, I haven't played in over a year now, but not because of lack of desire. I'm hoping I'll get out more next year when Reilly is easier to take care of so that the wife will let me off of "house arrest" on occasional weekends.

Anyone feel this is accurate? It has honestly been so long that I don't remember how much gas I went through in one day. I remember my 20oz lasting a decent time, my 50/3k being dissappointing, and the 68/3k being okay, but not fantastic.

http://www.zdspb.com/tech/misc/resources/shotspertank.html

Also, how abundant are refills at big events? I have never been to anything huge. I don't want to take myself out of the game for 1 hour for a fill. At that rate, I will buy the biggest CO2 tank I can fit in my vest. Maybe a 48oz and have the valve changed. I run a remote and this will be in the summer, anyway.

Suggestions on what I carry in field? I will have BDUs, boots, and a vest with I believe 10 pods. I may carry allen keys but I don't think I need them. The vest has a pouch for a camelback IIRC. Otherwise I will bring two USGI canteens.

I hate looking tacticool, but I would bring my Crosman 3357 just to be that guy if they'd let me.

I remember getting about a case out of my 20oz with my 98 and A-5.  I think my 50/3k was less than 500.  It's been a while though.

Hs has pretty much phased out c02 to the point that in order to get refills you must either walk to the office or leave your parking spot which both are ridiculous and unreasonable expectations of the patrons.

I don't even take a barrel swab out in the field. A break is not worth shooting through and damaging equipment. Gun and paint, and maybe water.

I've always quoted 800 shots per 20oz when advising people on CO2. That leaves enough play that if it's a hot day and they aren't firing a lot, or quickly, they'll get more shots and if it's a cold day, or are cranking it out, they'll get right around 800-850. Better to be pleasantly surprised I guess. Also, older 98s aren't quite as efficient as the newer ones I suspect. After all, they've had 16 years now to tune it up a bit.

It is funny how little differences popped up throughout the years on these things. I have two 98Cs, one from 2001 and "mine" with a 2004 manufacturing date and they look completely different.

I found my PMI 68 Magnum, "my" 98, the "parts" 98, a POS viewloader I paid $5 for, my free A5, my Pro/Carb I traded a Schwinn Stingray frame for, my SL68II, and my dads 68 Special. I'm still missing my POS cocker, Automag, Factory F/A, 68 Special, Phenom, and Crosman 3357.

Tallen, you were mostly right. 15 year tanks, and the regs changed so now hydros last 5 years. I may try to pick up a 68/45 or larger that needs a hydro and have it tested. If the prices are right, I'm really cheap.

I also may turn the parts 98 into a project. I have a E-trigger kit I got for dirt cheap, and I am considering upgrading the cyclone on my 98. That way, I would need simply a housing  and I would have a whole 'nother cyclone that I could put along with the E-trigger on the parts 98. If I can keep the thing under $30, I may do it for funsies.

Guys, I know I'm rambling, but getting back into paintball is seriously one of the best feelings ever. I can't describe how excited I am.

Edit: Does anyone still use agg? is agg still agg?

Watching YouTube videos of recent ion games, it seems pretty blue collar and not much agg.

I actually learned quite a bit about what's up these days at my field by watching recent videos. Clothing trends, guns, equipment, and game play.   I formulated my plan based on yt videos, Google Earth, and a field map and it worked out good. I'd try to figure out how to avoid those monstrous stalemates at the ion game. That game is massive

Central nj cl listing- this is the only listing that looked like a potential deal.   No Hydro info on the tank.

Yeah, most of the agg-type guys have left the "fun" fields and simply stick to their airball turf fields.

Most of the time at my local field, I've got the most high-tech gear and that's because I'm running a 6+ year old Mini.

Hs seemed full of agg. A lot of players with expensive, flashy gear. It seemed like a lot of players were new and didn't have much situational awareness nor did mammy of them care to bump up into the action. Just standing around looking pretty.

Regarding situational awareness, it's funny watching yt videos where players are sneaking through dead silent woods expecting action and you can hear guns blazing off in the distance.   There are many hs videos of guys walking around for a half hour not seeing one thing or even shooting. Knowing this i just trolled the oppositions entrance all day.

We get some agg-looking type folks at the field I frequent but most of them started out as recreational woodsballers and tend to play that way when not on a speedball field.  We get very few of the stereotypical jerks.

As for still playing;  my favorite markers these days are a 98C with response trigger and cyclone, my B5 and my first A5.*

*One of the first ones the local shop got in.  I got one for my son as well.  They have sequential 3 digit serial numbers.  I look at the serial numbers on the new A5s and feel old.

What is the best way to strip the paint on these things?

I started refurbing the "parts" 98. The parts 98 was cast in 2001 and has a SN in the 200,000 range. The paint seems much better than my 98. Brake cleaner did not have any effect on the paint, nor did Hoppes. Tomorrow I will probably try a generic chemical stripper or aircraft remover if I can find the can. After that, I don't know how to prep the aluminum. Denatured alcohol in a windex bottle will take care of any residue, but the aluminum will probably continue to corrode.

Strangely, my '04 98 has a much better casting, but the paint is crap. The SN is electropenciled, whereas the '01 has a stamped or engraved SN. The inside of the '01 receiver shows poor metal flow when it was cast around the bolt area. Nothing critical. Also, there is NO overspray near anything important on the '01, but my '04 had horrific overspray everywhere around moving parts. Remember the famous "polishing internals" mod?

Paint stripper is probably the best but transmission fluid will soften and damage the paint as well over a longer period of time. I wouldn't be too concerned about oxidation particularly because you plan to refinish it.

I can't imagine my polished aluminum 98 being any other way.
