I'm genuinely believing there was a mixup, otherwise I sure as <poopy> wouldn't be here... Oh well. Welcome to the party.

Maybe it switched back to post count or the admin handed them out to frequenters with a ton of post to contol the spam

My guess is that the Admin knows most of the old mod group is no longer active (EE, ShortyBP, Choopie, etc) and as such, have tapped those who are either long-standing members, or spot on when it comes to spotting spam.
My own "welcome to moderator status" PM from the admin was essentially "So, you're the only guy regularly reporting spam over the past few months, so here, take these powers and use them to get rid of spammers." I would like to say that I feel I've done a good job at blacklisting the spambot accounts. Regardless, I'm going to have to question the foresight or lack thereof in giving moderator powers to someone who has Idi Amin as their avatar... |

That's what I've been doing wrong. I see the spam, and want to make a witty comment, but decide against it and just let the mods take care of business.

Well, actually, the witty comment does nothing for you. It's the actual reporting part that gets anything done. I'm on here about 2x a day unless I'm super busy with work or away from home. Mainly checking for spambot posts anymore. I've banned whole IP ranges this past year because spamhaus had them blacklisted. That's really done a number on cutting the frequency. Now, when they spam, it's about 1x per month or so that I've seen, and it's usually 2-3 consecutive posts in new topics which makes it easy. I really do miss the good old days though when the forum was busy with new folks... |

While there are still new tippmann owners out there, the prices for used high end guns are so low, it makes sense to go with a different brand that offers better efficiency and performance. Therefore we see less new people here. Bigger forums are also probably taking away from us. Pbnation is huge and reddit takes a small portion of the people too. I see trails of doom posting on there. This subforum is so far away from paintball, I bet most people that would visit feel like they don't have a place in the community.

That's the biggest culprit IMHO. PB Nation was far less strict on language, topics, etc, so it became the bigger forum. Not necessarily better mind you, just bigger. MCB tends to attract the old-schoolers way more than PBN, but even then, I really don't visit much there anymore. Honestly, half of paintball for me was the experience here and at the shop during college, helping people figure out issues or teaching them how to make smart upgrades, etc. I still get that when I go to the local field, but those trips are few and far between anymore. Luckily, a good buddy of mine who is BIG into playing moved back to the area, so I've got more impetus to get out there and play this fall and next spring/summer. |

I tried playing again this past summer and the excitement wasnt there for me. Last time I tried to play and got bored with it quickly, I thought it was because I was out of shape. So I got into really good shape and tried again. Nope still wasn't fun for me. I now think that the group dynamic of who I played with before can no longer be matched.
/sigh. |

I've been watching a lot of paintball videos lately. I am determined to get back in the game. Maybe get my fiancee to play with me as well.My gear is across country from me, but I'm having my parents bring it to me when they visit. Will be playing in the Denver area next year. I don't think any of you are in that area, but hopefully there are some good spots.
Seeing the new Dye M2 really peaked my interest. I'm not going to pay the $1400 price tag for it, but the DM14/DM15 are now sub $500 so if I ever decide to upgrade, those are super cheap. Maybe by that time, the M2 will be cheap too.

I still roll out with either my Gen 1 Invert Mini and a sound-activate Halo (ReLoader B I think?) or my bone-stock WGP Black Magic to get the "wow" factor when there are younger kids around who have never seen a back-block kicking out with every shot.
Usually I start the day with the Invert, and once I've had my fill of running, sliding, and gunning, I switch over and play "lazy ball" where I spend my time on the flanks punching holes in the other team's lines and urging the young guys on my side of the field to push a little harder to take the field. I actually enjoy that part of it more than anything now. First half of the day, show the young guys how it's done. Second half, get them some openings and encourage them to go for it. I think it's really only possible at the field where I play now as it's generally rec-ball walk-ons. I'm probably the only guy there with a tourney-worn jersey, but it's better that way because I don't see the disheartening beat-down that I was beginning to see at other fields where the tournament guys finish up their time on the turf fields and decide to go show the rec guys what cheater-boards and unlimited money for paint can do to your day. This place doesn't even have any "real" inflatable fields. Just one they use for occasional small-time 3-man tournaments for fun. Otherwise, the only "speedball" field is pallets and drums, which I actually prefer. They still run with forts, log bunkers, lots and lots of pallets, old truck tires, cable spools, and there's even an old Ford probe that's all busted up and rusted out in the middle of one of the fields. It's crap for a bunker, but it just gives the whole thing that shabby "for fun" feel. Reminds me a lot of the old AG Paintball Games field and the old renegade pick-up games we played in NY that had 200+ attendees on a Sunday morning. Most of the guys out there are running lower-end markers too. Lots of Tippmanns in all configurations. I see a bunch of spiders, and it's all a mix of mech and sear-trippers for the most part. A few guys show up with DYE markers or other true electros, but they play it close to the vest because they too are tired of the tourney kids ruining everyone's day of fun. Mind you, it's still missing that group dynamic that God is talking about. Hopefully I get some of that back with my buddy Tim being back in the area. Otherwise, I just grab a couple of kids who are willing to take a suggestion and give them good cover while encouraging them to go for it. I really want to get Shorty back out there with me sometime. He hasn't sold EVERYTHING yet like Picasso and Big Al did, but he also hasn't played in probably a decade either. Crap... now I want to go play this weekend, but am stuck doing consignment sale shopping for the little one and then I've got a gig on Sunday... Bleh! |

I am worried that I have also run into this . . . with a side order of pain from the bad knee and pins in the back as well as a dash of out of shape thrown in. |

The group I play with lost the field/land. It was bought up and turned into condos for the elitist Hamptons crowd. That caused my group to drift and lose contact.

Everyone that I used to play with that still plays is still in the tournament scene which burned me out.
I got sick of it when I was going to practice and not going to play.

Yup, that did it for me too. Got involved with a team in the area years ago, spent every weekend practicing but not actually playing. To make matters worse, the guys who were supposed to be the "veteran" players on the team were huge cheaters. The day we were running opposition 3 on 1 drills and I nailed the captain off the break in the goggles and he came up shooting with a clear wipe across the lenses was the day I told them to all piss up a rope and hung up my gear for a while. The rec ball with walk-ons has been fun ever since. I just seek out the smaller paintball fields to play on rather than the big ones that cater to the tournament crowd. Can't stand Pev's in VA because of the kinds of jerks it attracts. |
