A shot to a pod full of paintballs can sometimes cause this.
In the future please put ALL questions in ONE BIG POST.

Balls breaking in the barrel is a very common porblem, paint to barrel match is the answer to that problem, use the links below as a reference to what barrel you are going to use on the marker and the size of the balls that will fit with the barrel

http://www.ottersccustoms.com/paintc.html

http://www.ottersccustoms.com/barrelc.html

Also age, cheaply made paintballs and the velocity of the marker being used is also another to factor to ball breaks.

if it was cold out that would make the shell of the balls britle, leading to breaks

lol, great topic title.  Cold weather usually can lead to breaks.  Also, if u got a flatline, they serve 2 purposes:  1.  To shoot far.  2.  to break balls .  If u got a flatline, make sure u get a perfect paint to barrel match, like Evil said.

Hence the saying "Flatlines dont break balls, Idiots do". With the flatline you DO NOT want a good paint to barrel match. You want a smalL paintball so that the paint can easily roll through the barrel.

I'm sorry for being unclear.  I meant to say a good paint to flatline barrel match, implying smaller bore paintballs.  Also, i am a big fan of the flatline, it just seems to break more balls then say, my Ultralite.  Or maybe it just seems this way, cause it's always memorable cause it's such a pain to clean .

Just thought I would try to clear things up.

Actually my brother uses 98C flatline and he has no problems breaking balls. Im nt sure what paint you guys are running but we're using the cheap CORE stuff you find at Dunahms for $35/2000. Just make sure you open it up and check out the balls before you buy.

I when my local paintball store was out of paint went to big 5 to buy paint
i was real desperate. so i got this PoS paint called zap if you ever see it do
not buy it if it doesent just not splat on the person itll break in your gun.
then next time they still didnt have paintn so i went there again and i
bought for 80 bucks 2000 paint PMI pros yes not bad actually pretty good
just hella expensive. I run an a-5 with a 16 inch jj pro barrel it tends to
work well with draxxus midnight or torque paint tends to work very well
if the field allows it (not as much water based)

$80 fer a case of PMI's, either yer exaggerating or you got ripped off, a case of 2000 of Premiums or Marballizers only cost 50-60 bucks and I usually get mine at SportsMart (Sports Authority).

Hello evil_fingers. If my memory serves me correctly it is PMI Premiums 68's ,Field style..The field where I play only uses these and w/ a season pass they are $80.00 . W/O the pass they are $107.00 for 2000..I just looked at Sears's website and they have the same balls but diff. colors for 1000 $27.00 a case.

Good God man, yer gettin ripped off blindly....you can pick up a case of PMI Premiums (2000 ct) at any pbshop fer less than $60 and fer Sears sellin paintballs....dont waste yer money on paintballs from them, jus use that money to get their tools (Craftmans ) and get the balls from the local pbshop or sporting goods store and here is a way you can save as well....get a case of 500 or 1000 ct balls from the store/pbshop and purchase a bag of 500 balls from the field (since you are required to use field paint which really sucks and everyone knows it) which is usually 20 bucks or less and mix the paint you bought from the store and the field paint....my friends and I and so many others have done this so many times and it does pay off in the long run.
