First, you need to decide which type of Paintball that you play, Woodsball or Speedball.  I do not know anything about Speedball, but if you play woodsball, a 98 Custom or an A-5 will definetely suit your needs.  Then, a new barrel for the gun and maybe firepower upgrades.  I hope this helps.

98 Pro Custom with Egrip.  Then get a halo B with rip drive, Empire reloader B, or an Egg. Then a nitro or HPA tank.  That'll get you having fun.  Then all you need to worry about is paint and air.

Are you willing to spend all $500? If you are then I cant help you, but if youre a beginer like I still am, and are only willing to spend about $150 on everything including paintballs, co2, and a mask, I would get a Viewloader Triad. I have one and im satisfied so far. (Ive had it for 3 days now)

If its your first gun......buy a 98C and maybe a new barrel. Spend the rest on field fees and paint so you can play and get better.

this is an awkward(sp?) situation, have you played before? how much experience do you have? he may have rented or borrowed in the past...these are all important factors

In general this is the best advice you're going to get. The 98 is a durable, reliable gun, a new barrel will make it perform very well, and you can't buy experience, so play as much as you can and learn from those around you. Remember though, flashy guns do not make a good player. Look for the older guy with a pump gun. :)

I can agree with that. Play with and learn to work on any gun you can get your hands on.

Well, definetly ponder whether you're going to play woods or speedball before you get a gun.  I personally play woods and i would recommend getting a 98 custom or an a-5 kit, for example the 98 custom power pack.  Then after you get some experience with the gun, pimp the hell out of it.

I agree.  You could also upgrade later with the extra money you earn.  You'll need to spend some on paint, mask, hopper (if you upgrade firepower), and CO2.  I would go first with a CO2 tank.  If you play woodsball I would deffinetly get the 98c.  I would also consider getting it if you play speedball, but I would just upgrade it to fit your paintballing needs and to match your skills.

Nothing wrong with a cocker. As long as you are not an idiot, you can handle one just fine. When you start talking about Ecocker, that is when you need a little expirence. Mech cockers rarly have problems and Ecockers seldom do. I have had my cocker for about a year and a half and my E2 on it for around 6 months and the bigest thing I ever had to do was time it.

You can look at the Impulse, they are around $500 and are pretty good.

I've got an Impulse, actually selling, and their a good gun. Little more than $500 though once you figure in Air, mask, clothing, and paint. I'd go with a 98c and trick it out with the basix.

I suggest an A5 for that money.  You will have extra cash.  Buy it somewhere that will let you upgrade a player pack to larger CO2 and better mask.  Play stock a few times and then start upgrading to make it your own style...  I love my A5 and my kid has a tricked out 98c.

For woods i'd say go with the A-5 and a new barrel, don't spend 120$ on the flatline get a 14 inch progressive, if your gonna play speedball with the A-5 get the e-grip and jcs double trigger i have one and it rips. Another good gun for speedball would be the ion or the 04 prostock autococker. hope that helps you.

The 98c and A-5 are alot a like in that they both have a lot of options and are very reliable markers. They would be an excellent choice for a starter or even a veteran. If you like woodsball or speedball and like to be a very aggresive player then you might want to look at getting a Reponse trigger and a good barrel like boomstick or j&j ceramic, the A-5 might be a good choice for this because it can come stock with a response triger and it already comes with a hopper feed. For woodsball you might consider a Flatline and a stock or a better sight depending on your preference. These are just some suggestions and there are a lot of upgrades you can look at such as Expansion chambers or stablizer, new hopper etc...

I highly suggest renting a gun first assuming you will be playing at a field, and see what types of games you like to play then break off of what was said before.
