I'm going to buy a new barrel for my A5, I was think of getting the freak back with the all american front 14". Is this a wise choice or should I go for a different combo or barrel alltogether? (In the same price range) It's mostly for woods but I want something that will be decent for speedball too. Edited by Scotchbroth - 31 January 2006 at 6:02pm |

That seems like a pretty good setup. You could also get the Evil Pipe
kit (i think the price is similar). The full blown Freak is good too.
If you want a one piece, consider the stiffi. its about the same price
as the freak but its supposed to be amazing. never tried it myself
though.

The front of the barrel doesn't affect performance that much. But I'd go with the AA front anyway. Better looking, and easier to clean than the Freak front. And the Freak back is a very good choice (really the only choice...). When matched properly with the right size paint, the Freak is just as good as any barrel out there, if not better than most.

Excellent barrel, but I would go with a shorter front. 14" on an A-5 is quite long.

Thanks for the input guys, I've heard good things about the Lapco Bigshot should i consider this, With respect to the combo i stated above. Would cutting it down to 12" affect performance at all?

Freak Kit>Bigshot. Both barrels are of awesome quality, so it really comes down to the paint to bore match. And with the Freak it's very easy top get this, while as the Bigshot, you'd need to buy the right paint, not just swap inserts. So go for the Freak, even though it might be more costly. If you are going to get a Freak you should get at least two or three inserts - otherwise you are missing the whole point of the Freak. You want an insert that is a tight fit for your paint, and a slightly bigger insert for when your paint swells a bit - at least.
