So I've got an old Compaq Presario 5000. I lived on this thing until I got my laptop a while back, so it's been upgraded as far as RAM and graphics cards go. Anyway, the only problem with the thing is that it had like a 988mhz processor, which basically destroys most games. My question is, is there anyway to just upgrade the processor without replacing the mobo? I tried to look the mobo up to see if I could find like a max processor speed or something but with no avail. Any help?

I'd need to know the make of the processor. AMD? Intel? I suspect it's AMD.
If you can get the processor make I'll figure out which MOBO socket it runs on, and from there let you know what your options are. Be quick. My BF2 patch is done in ten minutes. |

You may be able to find a P3 processor for Socket 370 (what your MOBO has) that will go up to 1.4ghz, but my advice is get a new MOBO, AMD Socket 939. Loads of options with a 939. There are some good, inexpensive AMD processors that will give you a pretty damned good upgrade for just a few hundred bucks.
What video card are you on? |

If you're gonna put a Socket 939 motherboard into a Presario 5000, you might as well start with a whole new computer. The Power Supply is probably some crazy Compaq Standard, so it wouldn't work with anything else, and the mobo might not fit etc.

Good point, Jack.
Ryan, don't do it halfassed. Just save up cash for however long it taes and make a enw machine. A Presario 5000 is realistically too old to do a good upgrade on. |

I'd just build a new Comp. I remember my Dell had a 305 Watt power supply (which is really low, and nonstandard). If you want to try to upgrade your Compaq, you could try a new power supply and better processor, but you're probably better off getting a new case, motherboard, and power supply. There's plenty of resources available online on how to build computers. Once you figure out if everything is compatible, it's pretty easy from there.

Yeah, I know guys. I know. I might check out some bare bones kits and start from there. I'm relatively techy, so I think I can handle it, I just don't wanna wait to save up and nickle and dime the thing to completion.....

Macs are typically very stable and good computers. Maybe not as upgradable as a PC, but Dells aren't very upgradable either. They use some nonstandard connections on their motherboards, and they block typical BIOS options from being accessed. edit- I dont' know about their new line of supposed "high end" computers, but the average ($400) Dell sucks for gaming. Trust me on this. Even the ones you buy for $1200 (ie. Dimension 4700) are still horrible. They lack proper cooling and ventilation, with one fan blowing directly on the processor and vertically mounted hard drives blocking the front vent. There are no additional fan mounts. Dells = PC Nazism .Ryan, don't listen to this kid. Edited by Benjichang - 01 May 2006 at 11:18pm |

Ok, so I wont get a dell. But yeah, just to milk a little extra knowledge out of better informed minds, are there any other components you might suggest, should I go on this quest for home built computer greatness? Also, any good sites would be helpful. Thanks.

Well, Newegg.com and ZipZoomFly.com are my two favorites for buying stuff, along with Amazon.
Tomshardware.com and AnandTech have good reviews. Definitely go with an OEM version of XP, it's only like $90 for Home and $140 for Pro, Media Center Edition is like $120, but I don't know much about that. However, in June or July, AMD will be releasing a new socket, AM2. It'll have 940 pins, but won't be compatible with 939. It's gonna take DDR2 instead of DDR (DDR2 made today is just now reaching frequencies where it will start to show it's advantages over DDR1, so right now they're about equal, but as DDR2 gets faster it will get better and better, as DDR1 probalby won't be improved upon). So if you want the very latest for future upgradability, you might just want to save up and wait till maybe late winter, then you can get an AM2 system with Windows Vista after some prices have dropped and reviews have come out. 6 months after new technology comes out is a great time to buy. I don't know much about the Intel side of things... But if you don't want to wait, that's not all bad. Windows XP will have a Service Pack 3 some time soon, and you can probably buy an "upgrade" version of Vista later. Socket 939 and DDR will be around for a while still, and PCI-Express will be around for longer than your computer will last, so no problem upgrading video cards. Some good mobo brands are MSI, DFI (although they can be fussy), Asus, I think Gigabyte and Abit are pretty reputable. eVGA makes very good Nvidia cards, and they have one of the best (if not the best) warranty in the business. ATI is picking up ground too though, after a little lull they got into, and X800 or 850 cards are now getting to be very cheap, but still offer good performance, like the Nvidia 6800 series. Oh, and don't skimp on the power supply, or you'll regret it later. I like Antec, Enermax, SeaSonic, OCZ, PC Power and Cooling (expensive). so yeah... just read lots of reviews and articles and you'll be a nerd in no time. ![]() Edited by Jack Carver - 02 May 2006 at 12:01pm |

Hehe, I miss my nerd days. That's what it is, I used to be a pretty well read, tech-savy nerd. Then I started spending 90% of my time with my girlfriend and he redneck family. That kinda kills the nerdism. I kinda had the same thing happen with paintball too, which is sad. Thanks for the tips though man, I'll definately check that out. I might go ahead and save until July and do all that. Any idea about how much cash I'd need to build a pretty highend system around that time?

i purchased an xps system from dell....didnt do anything to it and it
runs fine...i dont do much gaming, but my wife plays the sims 2 and it
doesnt crap out at all...good frame rate...
but yea...if i cared enough, i would definatly build my own computer...just wanted something that would play the sims 2 smoothly... runs dreamweaver mx 2004 great.... btw...if you want something fun to do with that old computer... look into getting linux... i have a distro called DSL it is really neat. it is all of about 50 mb and has everything that anyone needs...(note i said NEEDS not wants.) it comes w/firefox, a text editor/html editor/etc. and a bunch of other cool stuff... also, there is a thing called MyDsl where you connect to their program librarys and can download some really great programs that install with two clicks.... look into it. |

You can check out this article too.
I'd say if you can scrape $1500 together, you'll be able to build a pretty solid future-proof gaming rig. Do you already have a monitor? |
