Not really. As I understand it, a closed-bolt shoots the ball before it cycles, like pumps and 'cockers. Open bolts blowback, let a ball load, then fire it forward, like Tippies and Spyders. |

Closed bolt= the bolt always being in the closed position. the gun then fires cycles the bolt back and then forward again to bring another ball into the breach. Open bolt is just the opposite.

why most people dont know the dif is cause ATF made open bolt firearms illegal to make for the public (too easy to make into fullauto) ie: pre 1981 MAC-10=openbolt post 1981 MAC-10a1=closed bolt

A Viking gets a case pretty easily from a 68/4500 and it's open bolt. I would think shot-to-shot consistency has more to do with the air supply than anything else. It has never been proven (conclusively) that closed bolt guns are more accurate. |

Tyger had a show on it. It really comes down to the player and recoil. Automag is an open bolt. |

I think not,,, the difference , as far as I can tell between the open bolt and closed bolt is the inertia (think movement ) caused by the bolt cycling before , or after the shot . Both systems do not fire the ball until the bolt is forward , the difference is the closed bolt systems , the bolt is forward and still when the shot is about to be fired . That "MAY" make the closed bolts marginally "More accurate" because nothing moves until after the trigger is pulled and the ball is propelled from the barrel . |

While this is just a though at may be right, I don't know. But as accuracy goes it could be to do with inertia (as shadowminion says) which would make a closed bolt more accurate becase.....with an open bolt the bolt is back with the ball in the chamber, when the trigger is pulled the bolt goes forward and the ball is fired meaning when the ball is fired the only movement is the bolt moving forward giving the kick. But on a closed bolt the bolt starts life forward, then when the trigger is pulled the bolt comes back to chamber the ball then moves forward to fire the ball. Because the bolt moves forwards and backwards before the ball is fired the inertia would nearly cancel itself. Just a though, never really got too deep into the technical side of paintball so the thought never really crossed my mind. |

Open vs. closed bolt is an old, old topic of discussion in paintball. Some articles and posts for edification: one over on Custom Cockers directly discussing the topic and a really long one on PBN that takes some deep looks into the physics behind paintballs in flight. The first one talks mostly about why closed bolt markers were first thought to shoot farther and/or straighter. The second, while getting pretty angry and vile in places, will teach you more about what actually happens to a paintball after you pull the trigger than you ever thought you wanted to know. Sorry merchants, this one just jumps up and down on some of your advertising claims. *shrug* Eh, you'll live.

Wow, this is an oldschool discussion...I don't think I've seen a good open bolt vs. closed bolt discussion since Old Blue.
