    Posted: 09 January 2007 at 3:10pm
Ok, my friend just bought a new mother board, new video card, and new power supply for his comp.

He hooked it up, fine, it started up, showed the Asus start up pic, and the option to go into to the setup (bios)

So we went into the bios, and I heard that when adding new hardware like a mobo it is safe to just reformat the hard disc.

So we put the primary bootup as the CD drive, inserted the Windows XP sp2, cd, and then saved and exited the bios.

"Push any key to start on disc.....) appeared, I pushed enter, "Detecting system" apears, then it the words disapeer, and then nothing, black, for ever (well we waited about 10 minutes with no LED turning on, on the cd drive)

So, we doubled check the hookups, and tripled check, we are sure everything is fine,

We also tried to boot up from the hard drive and it said "boot up, Failure"

We phoned Asus, and they told is to check to make sure the primary disc was the last on the parrelel ribbon (it was) then they continued to tell us stuff, that we already new
Then they said to bring it back, but we really dont think anything is wrong with it.

We also, tried using a CD drive from a working computer, and still nothing.

Please any help, would be awesome, sorry for grammer/spelling

Will it boot from any other CD or floppy? Could you burn a live Ubuntu CD or something?
Also you might want to re-set the CMOS using the jumper. Unplug the mobo and then hit the power button before you do to make sure it gets fully drained.

This has worked for me on a few occasions when my comp wouldn't boot.

Could you post the name of the new mobo as well as the old mobo (if possible), processor and RAM?

For some reason I suspect RAM issues if its not the CD, but unless the sticks were damaged during the swap or they are incompatible with the board it doesn't make sense.

Also, have you tried putting in the Windows XP CD, install from that then install SP2 after?  Thats how I usually install windows on a new build and it works.

My video card decided to switch my monitor to my built in GPU randomly on start up when I first installed it, so I'd have to plug my monitor into the other port before I could see anything. It could be a display problem.

Does the mobo have a built in gpu you can plug the monitor in, so you can bypass the new not-yet-installed graphics card, if for nothing else than to kill a variable.

I'm probably off base, but yeah.

Sounds like you have an IDE device not plugged in properly, or else a jumper on the drives aren't agreeing.

Are you using Cable Select? I know my Asus board doesn't always find a drive that is set to cable select.

I hope you won't be paying for it, because to me, i would not run vista even if it was one dollar.  Software Bloat FTL!
