Yesterday I was curled up on the couch watching "Escape from Alcatraz" It was colder than cold and I was comfortable. All of a sudden my scanner goes off, asking for us to respond to a single car accident, subject out of the vehicle. I figured as cold as it was, I wasn't going anywhere.....but it turns out the wreck was half a mile from me, so I said "what the hell" and responded first on the scene. I didn't bother going to the fire house since I'd have had to PASS the accident to get there. Short story even shorter, for one guy smashed off the road into a field, we had local police, county sheriff, an ambulance, our huge fire engine, our command truck, and a tow truck show up, amounting to 10 firefighters, 2 policement, 2 EMTs and the tow truck driver. People driving through there must have thought the world was ending. One rubbernecker almost ran me over. Some idiot from New Jersey was clipping along the dead end, twisted road a hell of a lot faster than he should have been, tagged a tree and spun into a field....again adding proof to the statement that "New Jersey people can't drive" He was alright thankfully, didn't even require a transport. Oh, but his nice shiny blue SUV wasn't worth much more than a handful of paperclips when I got there. The funny part was, he said he was looking for a walgreens......we don't even HAVE walgreens around me, for like an hour and a half. .......then I found $10. /lame story. That makes me laugh because I once witnessed a crash just outside my office, in a small town. It was a one car accident, somehow, a pickup truck had drifted off the road and struck a telephone poll. It would have been just a fender bender, but the truck broke the radiator, therefore required a tow.
The wreck happened about a block and a half from the fire station. The first firetruck at the scene was the company's biggest ladder truck arrived, with lights and sirens, and when the truck pulled upto the wreck, two firemen jumped out in full firefighting gear, complete with helmet on (with the visor down) and fireaxes in hand. Before it was over, nearly a dozen firemen had showed up, they had brought out the ladder truck and two tanks, and two ambulances from two different companies. |

A ladder truck for a single vehicle??? THATS funny, unless that was the only available pumper they had. Still though, we didn't even pull our turnout for this one, rarely do unless the car is on fire or we need to extract someone. Our town doesn't even HAVE a ladder truck. |

To call the Boswell Fire Company a tad overzealous is an understatment. When I first started working in town, I'd notice their fire trucks made a very peculiar sound when the sirens were turned on. I couldn't figure out why. Until one day, I standing outside with a view of the firehouse when they were dispatched and realized they had the lights and sirens on before the engines even pulled out of the firehouse! The sound I couldn't figure out was the siren, echoing in the garage bay.

That's the way it was when I used to work as a cadet at the local fire hall. Massive over-kill on number of people who respond.
People are just bored. |

Like a dog getting excited about getting fed and peeing all over the carpet. We had a fender bender outside our house a couple years ago, you would of thought a bus full of special olympics contestants ran off a cliff the way the county responded to the scene. |

I suppose my town, all be it small, doesn't seem to over react to certain situations. On more than one occasion, there have been car accidents literally RIGHT in front of the fire station and only 2 or 3 guys would walk out of the station, as casual can be.
I suppose though that you could write off the unusual amount of responders to the fact that fire stations like to be prepared for ANYTHING, just in case. |

DC is the exact opposite. I had a car flip end over end twice in the air on the beltway about a year ago. Came down on the roof and slid for 100 feet. I stopped as did two other people, but that was it, no one else even stopped. I actually had to stop traffic going past the accident that JUST HAPPENED to get to the car. Got the door open and got the woman out, but it amazed me that no-one in any of the lanes near her even stopped. Response time by the fire, police, and ambulance were amazing though! Big props to the Metro-area Fire Depts!

We had a brake in at a grocery store, and over 15 cops showed up, and I think a couple had M-16's. Kinda lame when small towns do that, when all it comes down to a meth addict wanted some Beer...

Thats one thing I'll say about our little volunteer job....when the tones go off, people come out of the wood work to help out. Our response time is pretty good too, though it helps when 4 of the members live right around the corner from the fire house, the trucks all call out of service within 2 or 3 minutes from the time the bells go off. We had an accident right outside of the station one day, the response time was something like 3 minutes. "Hensonville fire respond to single vehicle rollover in the vicinity of your station." By the time I got the car turned around (I was headed out of town) I heard "13-7 on the scene"

hahaha..
Yea our Cops have to keep to a Certain time line for each Situation, or something odd happens like write-ups or Suspensions... can't remember, I just kinda laugh when there is 1 DUI, there are over 9 Cops, when 4 or less can do just fine. |

Sadly, no. I didn't think to grab the camera on the way out the door, and not having cell reception in the area, I didn't even take that. I'll start taking a camera to any local disasters from now on.

Heh, I was a witness at a crash a couple of months ago where some drunk kid blew through a stop sign and into someones yard, smashing through two trees and pinning one of their cars against a bigger one. This one was a little worse than the one you went to but I was stuck there for like 2 hours because of all the emergency vehicles blocking the way out. I always have thought that kinda stuff funny.....Guess boredom does have some positive aspects...lol...

I drove by an accident saturday afternoon. A moving truck smashed into the side of a car and both went off the road. As I was leaving I saw my friend walking to his car. Yesterday morning I learned the woman driving the car died, and my friend was the first person to stop. He said he tried to wake her up but she was already gone... creepy.

Only car accident that I have seen was when a Lambo hit a guy on a bike at like 70mph in a 30 zone. and the cops said if the car was not so low down he would have died. Because the car accually didn't hit the guy but only the bike.

My sister, a buddy of mine and I were leaving a huge civil war reenactment in Virginia. About 4 hours up route 81 through pennsylvania we hit major traffic. Turns out there was a huge accident, and as we drove by the wreck, the hair on the back of my neck stood up, there was a shoe in the middle of the road, but even worse, I recognized one of the cars pulled off the side of the road. It was our Battalion commander. His father had gotten tagged by a truck when a box had fallen off their trailer and he went out to get it. |

A few months ago some kids went to his ladies house in my nieghborhood (mind you this lady is insane) and broke a few of her potted plants. So I'm walking to the and I see 6 cop cars and a K-9 unit outside her house. I talk to a friend who lives across the street from her and he told me what happened, and that she was insisting the police fingerprint the pots for evidence
